Music comes in many form, styles and genres.
Musical styles encompass a wide array of distinctive sounds and characteristics that define a particular genre or category of music. Think of them as musical "flavours" that reflect a combination of various elements such as rhythm, melody, harmony, instrumentation, and cultural influences. Different styles often emerge based on historical periods, geographic regions, and social contexts, shaping the way musicians express themselves. Like the syncopated rhythms of jazz, the amplified distortion of rock guitars, or the intricate patterns of classical orchestration all contribute to unique styles. Additionally, the lyrics and themes in a song can be influenced by cultural, social, or political contexts, further shaping the overall character of a musical style. Whether it's the soulful crooning of R&B, the electronic beats of techno, or the storytelling in country music, musical styles serve as vibrant reflections of human creativity and diversity.
Styles of music assessment
Year 9 Music – Music Research Assessment
Task:
In this task, you are required to demonstrate independent learning actions by researching a genre of music and presenting it via Prezi or PowerPoint.
Outcome:
You will have learned about a genre of music and looked into 2 or more artists associated with that genre. You will also learn about how they have been influenced and/or have influenced other artists in that genre. Eg, a study of Hip Hop and a study of two Hip Hop artists (Jurassic 5 and Beastie Boys)
Instructions:
Working individually in class and in your own time, you are to decide on a genre of music and research it. You should detail and point out the features of that genre of music. Then, discover two artists that you will then go on to research. For example, you could choose Hip Hop. You would then discuss what makes the style of Hip Hop (Turntables, MC’s), and give a brief history of the genre (started in the Bronx, USA). Your research will also detail information about the artists you have chosen. Below are some points you could use to guide your search for information.
● A brief biography of the artists/bands that align with your style
● Important information about genre/style. Include important points and dates. You could use a timeline
● Influences that your artists have had on others and how they have contributed to the genre
● Link other artists to the style. These can be small bits of information. Remember to have a good amount of information about at least two artists.
● Similarities between the influences and the artist or genre that you have researched.
