Classroom guidance lessons are taught to the whole group in a developmentally appropriate way for the students' age and grade-level. These lessons are delivered monthly or bi-monthly and address topics such as recognizing different types of feelings, bullying prevention, kindness, respect, anger management, conflict resolution, career exploration, etc.
Small group counseling is offered to students whose teachers or parents believe they could use a little extra help in the areas of emotional regulation, grief, and anxiety. The goal is for students to realize they're not alone in what they are going through and also be given the chance to talk through how they would react in certain situations where their areas of struggle are triggered. We discuss appropriate ways to respond in several different real-life scenarios and teach coping skills that will help them get through these challenges in a more proactive way. A consent form signed by a parent/guardian is required prior to beginning any small group counseling.
Individual counseling is offered based on each student's unique circumstances. Parents, teachers, or students can request to talk to the counselor. The counselor will reach out to the parent and discuss the possible benefits of individual counseling. This can be a very helpful short-term tool if there has been a recent change in home life or at school. A consent form will be sent home for a parent/guardian signature before individual counseling can begin.
Teacher-School Counselor Referral
Student Request to Visit Counselor
Our daily check-in/check-out system is a part of our multi-tiered approach to behavior. It is a tier 2 support for students that are referred to the program by their teacher for a more detailed look at a student's behavior each day. The students who are approved for the program are given a building-level mentor other than their classroom teacher to check-in and check-out with each day. Students and mentors discuss all of the positive things that can be done to improve behavior in the areas of being ready, respectful, and responsible.
