We understand that starting out as a subject leader can be quite daunting and so we have developed a progression framework to help you understand the journey from novice to expert. It is our role to support you in doing so.
An emerging leader is likely to be a teacher early in their career or a more experienced teacher taking leadership of a new subject
An effective leader likely to be an experienced teacher who has a sound understanding of the requirements for the subject and is able to support others to improve their teaching in this area
An expert leader is likely to be a highly effective teacher who has the ability to develop the effectiveness of other staff. They demonstrate all requirements of an effective leader. to support emerging leaders across the Trust within their subject.

An effective subject leader
Have an oversight of curriculum coverage and ensuring that the curriculum meets national requirements ensuring a progression model in knowledge, skills and vocabulary.
Ensure that colleagues are aware of these expectations
Make any meaningful links across subjects that will support pupils to know more and remember more, more effectively
Consider future developments to the curriculum statement, progression or Long Term Plan if this is required
Ensure that appropriate resources are in place to deliver a rich and challenging curriculum
Implementation

Ensure that teaching within their subjects is good and promotes the acquisition of key knowledge, building on prior learning professional development providing guidance and support to colleagues
Oversee assessment
Make best use of finance and human resources to impact on standards
Promote the subject and championing the subject with colleagues and pupils
Use the school’s monitoring plan to capture whether the quality of implementation is strong and effective. They will do this through visiting lessons and conducting learning walks, pupil interviews, work scrutiny and drop ins.
Carefully assesses and appropriately addresses subject specific professional development needs of those engaged in teaching the subject

Check whether the quality of the school’s intent is effective and builds a coherently sequenced curriculum towards agreed goals.
Monitor the effectiveness of teaching and the impact on learning and standards to check the effectiveness of the school’s intent and implementation strategy
Evaluating and summarising all aspects of the subject to define the next steps for improvement
Leaders will provide a bi-annual summary of impact to the Local Governing Body.
SLT and Leaders will review impact at the end of each academic year.
