As we move through 2026, our school remains dedicated to ensuring every child has the best possible start in life. Regular attendance and arriving on time aren't just about following rules—they are the foundation of your child’s academic success, social confidence, and long-term well-being.
Why Regular Attendance is Vital
Every day of school is a carefully planned step in your child's learning journey. When children attend regularly, they:
Achieve More: Research from 2025 shows that primary pupils who attend nearly every day (95–100%) have 30% higher odds of reaching expected standards in reading, writing, and maths compared to those with slightly lower attendance.
Build Strong Friendships: Consistent attendance helps children feel part of their peer group, making it easier to form lasting bonds and social skills.
Develop Confidence: Missing school can leave children feeling "lost" or behind, which can lead to anxiety. Being present every day builds a sense of belonging and academic self-esteem.
The Impact of Punctuality
Arriving just 5 or 10 minutes late might not seem like much, but it adds up quickly. A child who is late by 15 minutes every day misses two weeks of learning over a single school year.
Settling In: The first few minutes of the day are often when teachers explain the day's schedule and vital learning goals.
Reducing Stress: Walking into a classroom that has already started can be embarrassing and stressful for a child. Arriving on time allows them to greet friends and settle in calmly.
How You Can Help at Home
Establishing good habits now sets your child up for success in secondary school and their future career.
Morning Routines: Prepare bags, uniforms, and PE kits the night before to avoid a morning rush.
Only Stay Home if Truly Unwell: Follow the NHS "Is my child too ill for school?" guide—children with minor coughs or colds should generally attend unless they have a temperature.
Schedule Smart: Aim to book medical appointments and holidays outside of school hours or during term breaks.
Talk Early: If your child is struggling to attend, please contact us immediately. We are here to listen and provide support where we can.
We will be celebrating good attendance with cirtificates and writing to those whoose attendance needs attention.
This is a reminder for parents who have children born between September 1, 2021, and August 31, 2022, who will start primary school (Reception year) in England and Wales in September 2026, to have completed their application for their preferred school before the 15th January 2026.
Applications can be made via the Rotherham LA website.
Applications need to be made even if you already have an older sibling at Thorogate School.
INSET Days have been added to the school calendar on Friday 22nd May and Monday 1st June 2026. Whilst teachers will be in school, school will be closed to pupils.
