Advanced Learning Plans

Advanced Learning Plans (ALPs) Process

The CDE requires students set at least two goals per school year - one in the area of student giftedness and one as a goal for affective needs. Mrs. Marchman meets with students individually to make a first pass at ALP goals, give students options, and seek their feedback and interest. Students share the goals they considered with their families before we meet as a Student/Family/Mrs. Marchman team. This year, all ALP conferences with students and families will be done virtually and must be signed by student and parent/guardian electronically. The district is providing the software to accommodate electronic signatures.

When will ALP goals be written?

The guidance from Thompson School District is ALPs will be written, signed and shared with gifted-area content teachers before the end of the school year. Mrs. Marchman will start with sixth, then eighth, then seventh grade students to set their goals. Eighth grade students set their affective needs goals last spring, but are welcome to change them.

Mrs. Marchman will use Learning Lab time (3:30 - 4:00) on Mondays and Fridays to work with "in-person" students on ALP goals and advisory time (3:00 - 3:30) to work with TCO students on ALPs. She will set up Google Meet appointments with students individually to discuss their goals and review progress of last year's goals. To get through the caseload in a timely manner, students will do some asynchronous research on possible ALP goals so the initial meeting will be only 15 minutes.

ALP goal conferences with families can happen during parent-teacher conferences once the student has decided on goals OR during Learning Lab time second semester. Mrs. Marchman will work with each family to nail down logistics.

Progess monitoring ALP goals

Students will self-monitor their progress toward ALP goals at least twice with Mrs. Marchman through the school year. Each student has a Google Sheet with their personal goals on it that is shared with Mrs. Marchman and the content teachers in the area of giftedness.
