Gifted and Talented

Gifted and Talented Teachers

Bill Reed is lucky to have two Gifted and Talented teachers. Mrs. Marchman is the main point of contact. Mrs. Quinones works with 7th grade affective needs groups.

MRS. MARCHMAN (in NYC, January 2020)

Mrs. Marchman helps students and parents identify an annual ALP goal in each area of giftedness and an affective need as required by the CDE. She works with students, parents and teachers to identify new GT and talent pool students. She provides affective needs support to 6th and 8th grade students. Mrs. Marchman coordinates with elementary and high school GT teachers for transitions to and from Bill Reed. She will provide math extensions for GT and talent pool students who show mastery of math units.

To request a meeting with Mrs. Marchman, please fill out this quick form. This is open to all students and families of Bill Reed Middle School.

MRS. QUINONES ("Q") (with her son, April 2020)

Q provides affective needs support for 7th grade GT and Talent Pool students. (She is also the brilliant DRAMA teacher at Bill Reed!!)

Gifted and Talented Bitmoji Classroom

This is the main classroom for GT students. Feel free to click around to find ideas about ALP academic goals, affective needs resources, and a link to our grade-level Google Classrooms. (There are also a few other links to explore.) Mrs. Marchman will update this based on what GT and talent pool groups are working on.

Services available

Students who are identified as Gifted and Talented or who are in the Talent Pool work with Mrs. Marchman or Mrs. Quinones on progress toward affective needs. The National Association of Gifted and Talented students identifies several affective needs that gifted students often have, such as perfectionism, time management/organization and self-advocacy. Our staff provides small-group and individual support for students needing more help in these areas.

Gifted and talented students are clustered together in core classes to deepen and add complexity to their work together academically. Research shows that clustering gifted and talented students is an effective way to meet academic needs of these students. Core teachers are aware of the Advanced Learning Plan goals of each gifted and talented student in their classes and work to support GT students in class toward their goals.

When are services offered?

Gifted and talented students meet with GT staff for affective needs during the learning lab time. (3:45- 4:15). GT staff will set up the meetings and groups after working with the students to identify where they could use support. (There will be no affective needs groups during the month of December so teachers can focus on testing and identification.) All Learning Lab groups will be held virtually for easy access for all students.
