What is STEM?
So what exactly IS S.T.E.M.?
You may have heard the word "STEM" a lot in the past couple of years in schools, work and the media, but what exactly does it mean? STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and math and is more than just the subjects it stands for.
The idea behind STEM on a national level is to prepare the next generation of students to be competitive on the international level of technology development and high-tech jobs. The world is moving towards a reality where jobs like computer software developers, biomedical engineers, medical researchers and other STEM professionals will have the most career opportunities.
Thus, schools have adopted STEM Programs, curriculum and initiatives to help prepare current students for the changing world through a lifestyle rather than just a class. STEM approaches learning as a exploration where students must perform their own inquiry investigations, learn how to problem solve and be an interdisciplinary and holistic student. Classes are taught with the understanding that subjects interact with each other and a student with well-rounded skills will be the most successful in the 21st century working world.
