Good morning, Kindergarten!
Today is "Cinco de Mayo" or the 5th day of May. We are celebrating Spanish culture this Friday for our school's annual "Culture Day!"
Important! Today, we will have a very special guest join us for our Zoom class meeting. Ms. Ursino will be your first grade teacher next year, and she is joining us today! She is so excited to meet you! Can you think of a few questions you might like to ask her? They can be normal, curious, or silly questions. Get creative!
Today makes 150 days of Kindergarten!
Love,
Mrs. Bradley
PS- thank you for the birthday parade! It was so sweet!! ❤️
Estimate: 20 minutes
Math Warm-Up: Listen to "Hey Honey Bunny" and sing along!
Today's Lesson: Today we're going to work on adding mixed groups of coins! Get your pile of coins out. Watch the YouTube video linked to the left and follow along with real coins. Pause it to count with the teacher if you need more time!
Practice: Click here to access BOOM Cards. Scroll down your assigned decks list until you see "Counting Coins: Mixed Practice." Click to practice!
Challenge (not required): Matching Money Game
Estimate: 15 minutes
ABC Warm-Up: You'll need a partner for this. Sit behind your partner and "write" a letter on their back. They have to guess which letter you wrote! Go back and forth until you've both had 5 turns.
Phonemic Awareness: For this week's practice, we are going to use BOOM cards to practice counting syllables! Remember, syllables are the parts of a word. Click here to access BOOM Cards. Scroll down your assigned decks list until you see "Syllables." There are 60 cards in this deck. You only need to do 15 cards each day this week. Click to practice!
Phonics: This week we are talking about blends! Blends are a cluster of two consonant sounds that are each heard when the word is spoken. They are different from digraphs because digraphs join together to make a new sound. Blends still keep their normal letter sounds! Today we will work on hearing the /fl/ sound in words.
Check out this picture I made of some FL words I brainstormed. Can you think of more? Draw a picture of a few FL words. You can use my words or think of your own!
Read-to-Self: Read books that are "just right" for you... not too hard and not too easy. You may use the books Mrs. Bradley sent home with you, other books at your house, or Kids A-Z (Raz Kids) books by logging in on the iPad or computer. Read for at least 15 minutes.
Estimate: At least 15 minutes.
Skills: Complete an episode of Headsprout on Kids A-Z.
Estimate: At least 15 minutes.
Estimate: 15 minutes
Get out your story element paper. Review each element: good characters, evil characters, setting, problem, solution, and a little bit of magic. If you haven't found somewhere to add a little bit of magic yet, go ahead and add that today to your element paper! It can be a mythical creature (unicorn, giant, fairy, etc), it can be magic used in the story to solve a problem, or it can be something else you think of!
Today you get to put all of your ideas together! Before you start writing, I want you to tell your story OUT LOUD to someone from beginning to end. This will help you get your ideas in order using all of your story elements.
We will work on writing your story over the next 3 days. Set a timer for 10-15 minutes and have fun writing! I want you to try and get the introduction of your story and a description of your first character and setting into your story today.
PS- Fairy tales often start with the words: "Once upon a time."
Estimate: 20 minutes
Do you remember the insect life cycle? (egg, larva, pupa, adult!)
Yesterday we learned more about insects. There are several important characteristics of insects that we discussed!
Adult insects have 6 legs
Adult insects have 3 main body parts (head, thorax, and abdomen)
Insects have antennae!
Today you get to "Design" your own insect!! You are going to create a new imaginary insect that looks however you wish! The only requirements are that it includes the following:
labels for each body part (name and arrow)
6 legs
3 main body parts: head, thorax, and abdomen
antennae
Wings are optional
Made- up insect name
Bonus: include a description of your insect including where it lives, what it likes to eat, and any special traits
When you're done, upload a picture of your insect to your digital portfolio! Consider adding it to our class Padlet, too!
Estimate: 7 minutes
