Here, the children are playing tuned instruments (glockenspiels) musically. 

Working independently to perfect playing a melody 

The children are afforded oppertunities to increase their self-confidence whilst they practice and perform.

Using the voice expressively

The children learn songs that allow them to sing with expression, such as 'Is Jack Climbing Up the Beanstalk'. They focus on the musical word, 'pitch' and use their bodies to understand how the pitch rises and falls in the song.

Using symbols to create sounds


The children begin associating sound with symbols in Year 1. They begin sequencing sounds and learning about musical scores in preparation for learning about how to read and write formal notation in Key Stage 2.
