Nursery

Foundational Rhythmic Skills

In Nursery, the foundation of all musical skills is set down, with children learning how to play a steady beat and how to play simply rhythms.

Getting the Basics Right!

Essential listening and observational musical skills are taught right from the get go to ensure that the children understand how to make meaningful musical sounds on instruments and with their voices.

Learning Music Through Play

Children are encouraged to work collaboratively and to develop their own musical games and activities during free play.

Music outdoors!

Using the outdoor environment encourages the children to explore musical aspects during free flow learning.

Reception

Solo Performance

In Reception, the children's singing voice is recognised and opportunities for singing as a whole class, a small group and as a soloist are all afforded to the children.

Singing with Expression!

The children are free to be creative with their voices and to sing with expression - enjoying the range of the human voice, from high to low pitch.

Sharing musical ideas

The children have many opportunities to work collaboratively in their learning and this links strongly with the WHA value of teamwork.

Singing with enjoyment

Singing for a purpose is a focus in Reception, however, singing for joy is also encouraged, as this is a them that carries on throughout the children's music education at Western House Academy.
