The OSDA is providing the information below to assist coaches with aspects of Speech Events.
The resources linked here provide overviews of the OSDA's High School Speech Events. For those new, the OSDA General Overview is the place to begin! Our detailed category guidelines are in the Competitive Events Manual.
The National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) provides descriptions of and resources for events as well. At that link, the option to select a particular category will be provided.
The OSDA resources linked here provide insight into what judges see and are provided at tournaments to adjudicate competition in OSDA Speech Events.
Currently, at most OSDA sanctioned tournaments, judges can access these electronically at tournaments - they are not viewed or completed on paper.
The OSDA recognizes that generative AI provides educational opportunities for students and is expanding in its applications. While generative AI can be used to guide students to articles, ideas, and sources, the OSDA asserts that using or paraphrasing text from generative AI as a student’s original work in competition is a violation of the OSDA’s ethical standards. Additionally, text from generative AI cannot be used as evidence in a round (debate, congress, extemp). The original source of any quoted or paraphrased evidence must be available if requested.
Generative AI may not be used at any time during a debate round, during a Congressional Debate session, or during Extemporaneous Speaking preparation time.
For the State Finals, coaches must submit the completed Original Oratory and Informative OSDA Google Documents to the OSDA in advance, and they must bring the complete requested script information for interpretation events (Declamation, Drama, Duo, Humor, Program Oral Interpretation) to the tournament. These items must be provided quickly to the State Tournament staff if a protest were to arise.
