Summer Enrichment Opportunities

NC State Pre-College Program


NC State's Office of Undergraduate Admissions hosts three pre-college summer programs in June for students to learn more about higher education and finding community on a college campus. Applications will open in February 2023. During these programs, students will have the opportunity to live on campus and hear from NC State admissions staff and current NC State students to learn about university student life, engage in topics as they relate to the communities students identify with and higher education, and receive assistance with the college application and financial aid process. The programs are for rising juniors or seniors who have a strong interest or appreciation for Hispanic/ LatinX, Black/African American culture, or Native American/American Indian cultures. The programs are free of charge.

US NAVAL ACADEMY SUMMER STEM


Are you thinking of a career as a coder, game developer, designer, or robotics engineer? Then start with the experience of a world-class program like the Naval Academy's Summer STEM Program!

 

The Summer STEM program involves a vibrant week of problem-solving, exploratory learning, critical thinking, and team building for rising 9th-11th graders interested in a future in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

 

You'll work with students from all over the country as you test your problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration skills.

Tarheel Girls State


The American Legion Auxiliary Tarheel Girls State program will take place from June 11th to June 17th, 2023 location TBD. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 55 is now accepting nominations for this program. In the past, ALA Unit 55 has been able to pay the $400 tuition fee for several young women each year to attend this outstanding program. As a reminder, the eligibility requirements are the following:

 

Must be a junior in high school at the time of her selection.

Must be between the ages of 16 and 18 years.

Must be ranked in the top 1/3 of her class academically or have at least an unweighted GPA of 3.0.

Must be residents of North Carolina for a minimum of 1 year prior to their selection for the program and be attending high school in North Carolina.

Must be a U.S. Citizen or a legal resident of the United States.

Must be mature individuals capable of setting priorities and be in good physical condition to withstand the week's intense activities and demanding schedule. 

Preference will be given to children of veterans of the U.S. Military. 


CAMP SPARK


Camp Spark is hosting 20 young women, ages 14-18, for an immersive, inspiring five days of fun and excitement! Held in Greensboro, NC, Camp Spark allows campers to learn the basics of firefighting from female firefighters and learn valuable skills in the process.

Project Uplift at UNC-Chapel Hill


Project Uplift is a summer enrichment and college access program designed to promote and increase access to higher education for rising high school seniors, especially those underrepresented in postsecondary education. Every year, during May and June, approximately 1,000 high school seniors participate in one of four separate Project Uplift sessions. Traditionally, this is a two-day experience, Project Uplift participants live on Carolina’s campus, interacting with faculty, staff, and current students, participating in educational, cultural, and social activities. Project Uplift Scholars have the opportunity to immerse themselves in college life and experience the academic rigor and social climate of a four-year institution.

For over 50 years, Project Uplift has consistently provided a diverse selection of rising high school seniors from across the state of North Carolina with an opportunity to live, lead, and learn about the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a first-hand basis.

DUKE SUMMER MATH WORKSHOP

Summer Workshop in Math (SWiM) is a free workshop for rising high school seniors who are interested in mathematics, with a particular focus on advancing female participation in math. SWiM is particularly interested in increasing diversity in mathematics and in science and technology opportunities more broadly, so SWiM strongly encourages students to apply who are female or gender minorities. 

SWiM participants will attend two math courses, afternoon group work, lectures given by local professors at Duke, UNC, and NCSU, as well as panel discussions and social activities. Participants in the program will learn about exciting mathematics, discovering new arguments, and explaining insights to their peers.  The program concludes with a live broadcast of the presentations.

Throughout the workshop students will interact with undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty of the Department of Mathematics at Duke University.

Novant Health Hospital Volunteer

(Must be fully vaccinated to participate. These hours do NOT count toward the NCLA Service Hours requirement because this is not a non-profit organization.)


Our Junior Volunteer Program offers an opportunity for teens, ages 14 to 18 (must have completed the 8th grade – just graduated from high school), to serve during the summer. Our teen volunteers are trained and supervised by a Volunteer Coordinator and they perform many of the same duties as adult volunteers.


Junior Volunteers can learn about health care by assisting staff, visitors and patients with non-medical tasks. Junior Volunteers must be able to follow directions, accept supervision and work independently. We are looking for mature students who can make a reliable commitment of two back-to-back shifts one day a week for the summer program.


All Junior Volunteers for the greater Winston-Salem area are processed through the Forsyth Medical Center Volunteer Office. Young Innovators Program at UNC-Chapel Hill

The Young Innovators Program offers high school students the unique opportunity to work side-by-side with faculty on cutting-edge and innovative research in an immersive laboratory environment. Interns could be working to develop new therapies to cure cancer, designing a virtual patient to enhance the education of health professionals, using 3D printing technology to deliver drugs that prevent the transmission of HIV, and so much more.

Beyond getting paid to gain hands-on experience, the Young Innovators Program prepares students for the next step in their academic and professional careers by incorporating various team building, career development, and interdisciplinary activities into the program.

Summer VolunTeen Program


The Summer VolunTeen Program is designated for students ages 14 - 18 (applicant must be 14 years old on or before May 31, 2022 and not graduating this school year).

The 4-week Summer VolunTeen Program will start on Monday, July 11 and end on Friday, August 5. Each VolunTeen will be required to volunteer 2 full assigned days each week. The assigned Monday – Thursday volunteer days will remain the same each week with an 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. shift. Each VolunTeen must dedicate 64 volunteer hours to complete the requirements for the Program and participate in the Program the following summer (if eligible).

Anytown

ANYTOWN™ is more than a summer camp. For 30 years, ANYTOWN has been transforming young people in our community into passionate leaders. This immersive human relations and leadership development program gives Guilford County students an opportunity to live and interact with a diverse group of their peers, building a community based on inclusivity, respect and understanding. 

Who is it for? Each summer, NCCJ of the Piedmont Triad holds two week-long, residential ANYTOWN sessions at the Blowing Rock Conference Center in the mountains of western North Carolina. Each session convenes a group of 68 students (“delegates”) from Guilford County high schools. Delegates are recruited to represent the wide variety of races, religions, ethnicities, cultural groups, and income levels in our community. The camp fee ($650 per delegate) covers all the programs and activities as well as food, lodging, and charter bus transportation to and from Smith High School in Greensboro. However, money is never a barrier. Thanks to support from individual donors, corporations, and foundations, we offer generous need-based tuition assistance on a sliding scale. Most delegates receive some tuition assistance, and many receive a full scholarship covering all ANYTOWN expenses. 

What happens at ANYTOWN? Through workshops, discussion groups, and other activities, ANYTOWN delegates tackle tough questions regarding gender identity, race, religion, sexual orientation, ability status, and more. They find common ground to build a deeper understanding of and respect for others, learning to bridge the divisions that keep us apart and building an inclusive community. They gain a stronger sense of self and a heightened sensitivity to discrimination. They learn that what they do and say matters, and that it is both possible and important to stand up for what is right. 

What happens after ANYTOWN? ANYTOWN graduates can choose to become ANYTOWN Ambassadors, an opportunity to further develop leadership skills and promote diversity and inclusion among their peers and in their communities. After earning 40 service-learning hours by going to ANYTOWN, Ambassadors keep earning service-learning hours throughout the rest of their high school career by attending trainings, co-facilitating programs to their peers, and engaging in other volunteer opportunities.

NC State University Vet camp


VetCAMP is a 5 day summer camp hosted by the Veterinary Professions Advising Center (VetPAC) at North Carolina State University. Since 2011, this camp has educated students about careers in veterinary medicine and the various opportunities within the field. Camp activities include a tour of the College of Veterinary Medicine, basics of a small animal clinic, hands-on experience with horses, sheep and pigs at the NC State Animal Education Units,  suture and dissection labs, meeting the NC Turtle Rescue Team, learning about NC State majors and more!

UNC-Chapel Hill Sports Journalism Camp


Rising high school juniors and seniors with an interest in sports and media are encouraged to apply. This camp will include instructional sessions on sports broadcasting, sports writing, sports photography and much, much more. 

The Carolina Sports Journalism Camp will include practice in the field and will feature sports reporters and sports personalities. Students will take a behind-the-scenes tour of UNC’s sports media facilities. They will cover a press conference, write a sports feature story and experience what it's like to work on a sports media deadline.

Virginia Tech Architecture and Design Camp


Inside Design is an incisive introduction to the ways in which designers think and work. For individuals considering the world of design, this program cracks open the excitement and opportunities of architecture and related design disciplines. Primarily a hands-on experience, students work with long-time educators and practitioners in exercises designed to stimulate discussion and discovery of issues affecting the professions. No prior course or subject experience is necessary, just the initiative to break the bounds of conventional modes of thinking.

Swim with the sharks who know how to create and seize opportunities in ponds large and small.

Develop practical skills and the ability to think critically while gaining valuable exposure to important business topics and methods of analysis. Students will be exposed to the essential aspects of business needed to launch and run a company, including finance, human resources, management, marketing, and operations. In addition to working alongside experienced faculty and collaborating in teams, this institute ends with a team presentation, in which students pitch ideas showcasing the knowledge they gained throughout the week.

NC School of Math and Science: Step Up to STEM

Step Up to STEM is an innovative interdisciplinary academic program that uses exciting real-world subjects to challenge rising 9th and 10th graders across North Carolina and build their skills in science, math, technology, and communications. 

During the program's residential summer institute, students have the opportunity to take advantage of many unique enrichment activities. The program is open by application to eighth grade African American, Hispanic American, and Native American students who live in North Carolina. Students who are accepted into and complete the program as rising ninth graders are then offered a spot to return for a second summer of programming.

WSFCS Musical Theater Camp


This year they are doing the Broadway production of SpongeBob Square Pants: The Musical. It is a 4 week program which runs Mon-Thur 9am-4pm daily.  It is for students in the 5th grade through graduating seniors. Great relationships are formed with other students who have a love of theatre. Cost is $550 per student.
