Emma was born in Warwickshire, UK. She gained a bachelor's degree (B.Sc) in Biology at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, University of London in 1993. An interest in electron microscopy led her to a Masters degree in Biological Electron Microscopy from the University of Wales at Aberystwyth in 1994. Emma studied structural virology at the University of Oxford (St Cross College) - in conjunction with the Institute of Virology and Environmental Microbiology (IVEM) and gained her PhD (D.Phil) in 1998. Emma then went on to Postdoctoral research investigating structural reoviruses at Baylor College of Medicine under the auspices of Prof B.V.V. Prasad lab in Texas, USA. After four years enjoying Texan hospitality, and the birth of her first child, Emma and family moved to Uganda in 2003. It was here that Emma began a teaching career. Initially, Emma taught violin after gaining a teaching Diploma from the Associated Board for the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). Later in 2006, Emma moved back into the realm of Science and began to teach at the International School of Uganda where she taught MYP Science to Grades 6,8 and 9 and also DP Biology. Emma and family left Uganda in 2015 to move to KAUST, near Jeddah in Saudi Arabia where she has taught MYP Science to Grades 9,10 and DP Biology. Emma enjoys encouraging and inspiring children of many nationalities to be life long learners.
