Dance

Aims and Rationale

Rationale

The Arts Council England states that; “Dance as a subject is unique, in that it blends artistic practice with physical activity. Dance has an affirmative impact on young people’s education and learning and offers opportunities for all young people to perform in school and in local, regional and national events.”

Dance plays an important role within a student's all-round education and well-being, providing pupils with skills that they can transfer across the curriculum and into life. The study of dance as an art form develops pupils' social, emotional, physical and intellectual capacities. Due to its physical nature, dance provides a means of expression and communication distinct from other art forms.

Pupils begin studying Dance in the Middle School at year 7. Pupils learn how to work collaboratively as a team, as well as to use their initiative to work independently. In addition to having the opportunity to build their confidence and self-esteem when performing in front of others.

A high-quality dance experience is inclusive, coherent, purposeful and progressive and enables children and young people to experience the roles of creator, performer and critic. Like the other subjects in the Faculty of Arts, the Dance curriculum has been mapped into three areas:

  • Choreography (Heart):

  • Performance (Hands)

  • Dance Appreciation (Head)

These aspects are interdependent and they will constantly interact and interrelate with each other throughout a pupils’ curriculum journey. Dance is ultimately assessed in a very holistic way.
