PSHE
Aims and Rationale
Rationale
Age appropriate PSHE is essential for all children and young people. The study of PSHE is broad and covers areas such as relationship and sex education, as well as physical, mental and emotional health. TJWA have dedicated curriculum space allocated to allow pupils to explore concepts such as consent, staying safe and healthy relationships. Our broader PSHE programme also covers economic wellbeing, careers and enterprise education, as well as education for personal safety, including assessing and managing risk. To allow pupils the opportunity to navigate, participate and stay safe in this world, it is vital that we equip them with the skills to do so. That means providing each and every child with high quality PSHE. When taught well, PSHE education also helps pupils raise aspirations and achieve their academic potential.
PSHE develops social and emotional skills that are integral to our school culture and LIGHT values - Love, Integrity, Generosity, Hope and Tolerance.
Aims
Excellence in the Careers & Enterprise Faculty is achieved through 4 key areas: Community cohesion – we have shared values and vision, promoting consistency across all policies and procedures. Curriculum alignment – we have an embedded, inspiring and engaging 0-19 curriculum. Excellent teaching and learning – outstanding teaching, rigorous assessments, student absence monitoring, embedded behaviour policy, high quality tracking and interventions. Enrichment curriculum – offering a wide variety of opportunities that challenge and elevate ambition.
When students leave the academy, many will enter the world of work for the first time and live independently. There is a balance in preparing students to manage current lives and preparing them for managing their future. PSHE is taught through a spiral programme, revisiting themes, whilst increasing the challenge, broadening the scope, and deepening pupils’ thinking.
Core Theme 1: HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Core Theme 2: RELATIONSHIPS
Core Theme 3: LIVING IN THE WIDER WORLD
Our performance is measured through model engagement and behaviour, improved attendance, raised aspirations and attainment and faculty growth and recognition.
Progression in PSHE

Middle School Progression Map
Upper School Progression Map
Lower School Rationale
In the Lower School there is a focus on all 3 strands of the curriculum; Relationships, Health & Wellbeing and Living in the Wider World. This provides pupils with a broad overview of the subject and allows them to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their current stage of lives. This broad content allows for further depth and exploration as these pupils mature into middle school and beyond.
Pupils will gain a basic understanding of the knowledge and skills at an appropriate level. Pupils are learning new concepts and new vocabulary. It is essential that they develop their own opinions and they can understand consequences of behaviour. PSHE helps manage the physical and emotional changes at puberty and introduces them to a wider world and enables them to make an active contribution to their communities.
Readiness for Middle School
The following Historical knowledge/concepts are non-negotiables for the end of Year 4 for all pupils:
Pupils can give an opinion
Pupils can ask questions
Pupils can identify who best might be able to answer their questions
Pupils can explain their ideas
Pupils can verbalise how issues may affect people in different ways
Pupils can explore issues with opposing views
Pupils can discuss and debate topical and controversial issues
Pupils can carry out critical, constructive self-reflection
Pupils develop interpersonal skills required for positive relationships in a wide variety of settings (active listening, empathy, communication, team working and negotiation)
Pupils can gather and use data, analysing, drawing and defending conclusions using evidence, evaluating social norms.
Intervention and Catch-Up
Any pupils not yet working able to demonstrate mastery of the knowledge/concepts listed above will receive the following support in Year 5, and 6:

Lifewise software allowing teachers to RAG attainment (80% or below on Amber) will have additional support sessions.
Emotional interventions where required by SENCO progress issues will be recorded and reported to parents in-line with other non-core curriculum subjects.
Assessment opportunities will include; teacher assessments, peer and self-assessment.
Middle School Rationale
In the Middle School all 3 strands are covered although much time is dedicated to health and wellbeing. This is important as the pupils grow into teenage years and experience much change, including; puberty, school transition and become heavily influenced by the world around them. PSHE is taught through a spiral programme, revisiting themes, whilst increasing the challenge, broadening the scope, and deepening pupils’ thinking.
Readiness for Upper School
The following Historical knowledge/concepts are non-negotiables for end of Year 8 for all pupils:

Pupils will understand behaviours and attitudes that could make a relationship healthy or unhealthy, can explain some risks associated with pornography or alcohol use in a relationship
Pupils will understand how the choices made can affect my future
Pupils will understand how and why the influence of others can be harmful to my health and happiness.
Pupils will understand how the body, attitudes and influences change.
Intervention and Catch-Up
Any pupils not yet working able to demonstrate mastery of the knowledge/concepts listed above will receive the following support in Year 9, 10 and 11:
Lesson attendance will be tracked – 80% or lower subject attendance will have additional support sessions
Vulnerable groups additional 1- to-1 support
Spreadsheets to be completed allowing teachers to RAG attainment in years 1-4 (80% or below on Amber) will have additional support sessions.
Emotional interventions where required by SENCO progress issues will be recorded and reported to parents in-line with other non-core curriculum subjects.
Upper School Rationale
In the Upper School PSHE acknowledges and addresses changes that young people experience. Students deepen knowledge and understanding, extend and further explore attitudes, values and attributes acquired during middle school. PSHE education reflects the fact that students are becoming more independent and taking on greater responsibility for themselves and others.
