The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) becomes available usually in October -- which means you can file the FAFSA soon! Every college or university has their own deadline for the FAFSA -- some as early as November 15th -- so check out https://www.icansucceed.org/financial-aid/financial-aid-process/iowa-postsecondary-schools-financial-aid-deadlines
to find the priority dates for the schools you are applying to. You may add as many school codes as you would like to your FAFSA application. You will use your tax information from 2024 to file the FAFSA for the 2024-25 school year. The FAFSA is solely based off of 2024 taxes, so you won’t have to update the FAFSA with 2025 taxes.

Applying for Financial Aid:
Both the student and 1 parent will need to create a FAFSA user-id.
Students can help with the application, but a parent will need to help as there are many questions for them as well. (ex: social security # and tax information)
After you submit and the document is processed if you need to make any corrections or add any additional schools you may do that.
You will hear directly from the college/university that you list on the FAFSA application. Each school sends out its financial aid offer letter. These may come at different times.
*** Is it very important to check with each specific school to see when their priority date is.
If you are deciding between a few different schools and you have not received your financial aid offer letter yet you can call the specific school and ask the admissions department if they can give you an estimate for what you will qualify for regarding financial aid.
If you need help or have any questions while filling out the application you may call ican at 877-272-4692 they are very helpful along with checking out their Facebook page at ICAN succeed.
FAFSA should open for new applications in October, 2024
