Spanish - Year 6

Speaking is at the heart of Spanish lessons, but a balance between the four skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing is maintained.  Grammar is taught more explicitly, so pupils gain an understanding of how the language works. Songs, actions and repetition are still key elements of the lessons, to maximise pupil participation. The continued multi-sensory approach fosters pupil enjoyment of learning Spanish. Time is taken to consolidate learning, in order to increase pupil confidence and achieve learning success. Evidence of learning is assessed in the four skills in End of Unit Assessments. There are also presentation outcomes, for example pupils can introduce their (real or imaginary) family.

A discrete lesson on phonics sets the tone for the importance of good pronunciation and written accuracy. Some prior learning of numbers is reviewed and then extended, as pupils learn numbers to 31, so they can write the date accurately and ask someone and respond to the question: when’s your birthday?  Learning to say whether they have or don’t have pets extends the learning on talking about others in the present tense.  Pupils learn to describe the weather and their home. After lots of work talking in the 3rd person singular (he / she / it,) they return to talking about themselves and the clothes they wear. This being an olympic year, we end the term with a cross-curricular History / Geography / PE module in French on the Olympic Games! This is an excellent transition opportunity for the secondary phase.
