Spanish - Year 1

In Year 1, pupils start learning Spanish. There is an emphasis on oral participation and pupils start to gain an understanding of the correlation between sound and language in Spanish. Songs, actions and repetition are key elements of the lessons, to maximise pupil participation. This multi-sensory approach also fosters pupil enjoyment of learning Spanish. Time is taken to consolidate learning, in order to increase pupil confidence and achieve learning success. Although there is an emphasis on the skills of Listening and Speaking, pupils are introduced to the written word.

Children learn how to have an introductory conversation with someone in Spanish, then learn to talk about animals in the jungle and under the sea. There is also a challenge opportunity to learn to describe what these animals do. Colours and numbers are taught - key language that will be revisited as pupils progress through the primary phase. Learning about transport and their town conclude a year in which pupils will have learnt about the world further from them,  bringing them back to their own environment.
