All BCS teachers employ a range of strategies to support pupils within their classes to ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to learn and make progress. Teachers adapt their input, tasks and feedback to suit pupils’ needs, incorporating multi-sensory approaches into lessons. Quality first teaching enables all pupils to acquire new knowledge, increase understanding, develop skills and make good progress, according to their ability. All pupils are supported day-to-day, and some may require additional resources and interventions to help unlock their potential.
We take a proactive approach to identifying additional needs. WellComm is used to assess pupils’ receptive and expressive language in EYFS. A dyslexia screener is completed with all pupils in Year 2. Pupil progress is tracked regularly so we are able to identify any concerns promptly and provide appropriate intervention as necessary. Partnership with parents is key to ensure pupils’ progress is on a positive trajectory. Regular training is provided to all teachers and teaching assistants to ensure all staff remain upskilled and prepared to meet a variety of needs.
If you have any concerns regarding your child’s learning, their class or form teacher is your first port of call. They may recommend involving the Learning Success team if it is felt there may be barriers impacting any pupils’ progress. If a child is brought to the attention of the Learning Success team, they will be observed within a half term (although often much sooner).
If additional needs are identified, this will be discussed with parents. Individual Education Plans are produced and distributed to all teaching staff for pupils on the SEN register as outlined in the Special Educational Needs policy.
