Task 1
Alter an object that exists
________________
For this task, you must choose an object that exists already It could be a coffee cup, an old shoe, a chair – the possibilities are endless.
1. Create a brainstorm or make a list of associations you have for the object. What does it mean? What does it do? How do we describe it?
2. In a separate brainstorm or list (or however you would like to present it) think of meanings or descriptions that are the opposite of or different to the associations you have with the object.
3. Think of ways that you could alter your object using ideas from your second list to change or subvert the meaning of your chosen object. Make thumbnail sketches of at least four different ideas.
4. Choose one of your ideas and make it. Document it thoroughly. Afterwards, write a short paragraph evaluating the sculpture.
Tips:
- Your object shouldn’t be part of a commercial franchise (i.e. don’t use a marvel action figure) this is too packed with extra meanings
- Aim for a universal object – i.e. something that many viewers would be able to draw a similar meaning from or an object with significant meaning to yourself.
Checklist:
· 1 x brainstorm – associated words
· 1 x brainstorm – opposite association
· Thumbnail sketches – change and subvert original meaning
· Make – 3D sculpture (process included)
