For this this section of the assessment you will need a pizza box and masking tape. This will allow you to take the time needed for the work to dry without it being damaged in the process.
Oil painting in its nature is very different to acrylic, it dries much slower, it moves further and its blends easier. To some painters it is the superior way to paint, to others it is a nightmare! This is very much a subjective process for all painters, you will have to make your choice, you will not be penalised for not painting in oil paint!
Your first approach into oils should be experimental and enjoyable. You must do a minimum of three small thumbnail "sketches" in oil of your chosen subject matter. Again no bigger than your phone. You will still prime your surface with gesso and apply a ground in a neutral colour of your choice. Then using a monochromatic palette (1 colour and black and white) to create form using chiaroscuro to render your compositions. This should be quick and chunky, only pausing to blend in some areas and leaving it at a moment when it is still a sketch. Don't over do it! Just get used to the movement of the paint in comparison to what you are used to. See the below student exemplar for the type of thing you should be looking for in your oil sketches.

Over the next two weeks you will be required to finish a minimum of 1 final painting. Think of this painting as a clarification of your ideas to date. I would like to look at it and see the ideas you have been working through somehow reaching a point of conclusion in this work. Discuss your choice of subject matter in this work in your journal, show evidence of sketching some ideas and relating them to your previous work and or artists models you have been researching.
This work must follow the same practice of priming and grounding, looking at strong compositional elements, chiaroscuro and technical understanding of the paint being used. The scale is up to you, hover again if you wish to map it to the board then work within the framework of usual paper sizes or measure a size to fit within how your work is currently arranged.
