In small groups, read the story 'Horotiu' aloud. 

Always read in Te Reo Maaori first, then read in English. Make sure that everyone gets a turn - either read aloud together, or take turns reading a sentence or section each. 

In the same groups, highlight the kupu Maaori that are key to the story. In another colour, highlight the kupu Maaori that are new. Use Te Aka to develop your understanding of the kupu.

How could you introduce these kupu to your aakonga?

After reading the story, use popsicle sticks to create puppets of each character. 

Use your puppets to retell the stoy.
