Mihi was the focus for our July Rautaki session. Wiki supported us to understand the structure of a mihi, and shared some key phrases that we used to construct and practise our own mihi. These have already been taken back to classes to support our tamaiki. Adam built on our learning from the last session by introducing the paatai 'Noo whea koe?'. We used this to unpack some sentence structures, grammar, and key kupu that can be used in lots of other contexts.
Our first Rautaki session for 2025 focused on Te Kiingitanga, and Koorero. Wiki Papa shared her koorero about the whakapapa of Te Kiingitanga, including some important information about each Aariki. Adam Poka, Katie Wynard, and Wiki, supported kaiako and kaimahi to koorero Te Reo Maaori, by providing rerenga (sentence structures) based around whakapapa.
"I have loved being able to learn something, and then deliver it, and teach it to someone else. This has helped me to build my confidence."
"I enjoyed the low stakes nature of sharing in small groups. This is a really effective way of learning."
"Often we are the ones doing all of the teaching and sharing, so it's great to put ourselves in the shoes of the learner."
"These are things that I can take back to my classroom and use straight away with my tamariki."
"This made me excited!"
"I love the repetition, that's how I learn"
The third He Rautaki Maa muri maa mua session - Focussed on Koroneihana. Wiki Papa discussed the week long celebration, which is based at Turangawaewae marae. It starts on the 15th and finishes on the day that the Kingi was named - The 21st of August. On Day 6 Kingi Tuuheitia stood and addressed the people.
People support the kaupapa any way they can - and everybody is welcomed.
This celebration is a thriving example of Maaori principles in action:
Kotahitanga
Mahi Tahi
Mana orite
Puru i te toto
He Rautaki 2 - May 2024
The second He Rautaki Maa muri maa mua started off with korero by Wiki Papa about Te Paki o Matariki. This is the Coat of arms commissioned by Kingi Tawhiao around 1850. (See image below) This was one of the responses to the turbulent times that Maaori found themselves in. The aim of this was to uplift his people.
The 2 breakout sessions gave participants an opportunity to learn about Mana Orite : through Whakatauki, whakatauaaki and tongikura.
The other session was working on Toto ki te whenua - understanding about these principles through learning and unpacking the waiata - Kaupapa Honohono.

Our first He Rautaki Hei Anga Whakamua for 2024 was held at the Don Rowlands Centre, Karaapiro on Thursday, 15 February 2024.
This kaupapa was based on kootahitanga - uniting Maaori and Taangata Tiriti as a future focused strategy of learning and teaching in Te Oko Horoi.
