EDUCATION
Andrew K. Bowerly (b. 1984) graduated with his Batchelor's Degree from the University of Washington School of Music in 2007. During his time at UW, he was a student of Michael Brockman (UW), Timothy Salzman (UW), Brad McDavid (UW), Vern Sielert (Idaho), Chris Stover (UPS), Chris Chapman (CMU) and Erik Wiltshire (UO). His mentor teachers were Rick White (Northshore JH), Toby Bathurst (Kamiak HS) and Brian Steves (Kamiak HS). While in college he performed in the Husky Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Experimental Jazz Orchestra, Latin Jazz Combo and numerous other ensembles. He also worked at the Nordstrom Tennis Center for the UW Tennis Program as “The Voice of Husky Tennis", a position he continues to this day.
Andrew graduated with his Master’s Degree from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University in 2011. In grad school he worked with Max McKee (Bandworld), Eugene Rousseau, Robert Ponto (UO), Scott Plugge (SHSU), Patrick Sheridan (ASU), Sam Pilafian, The Boston Brass, Harry Watters, Arnald Gabriel, Johan de Meij, Jan Van der Roost, Paula Crider (LSU), Bobby Shew, Tony Maiello (George Mason), Col. Lowell Graham, and Greg Yasinitsky (WSU). He has also studied conducting with Paula Holcomb (SUNY), and Ricky Badua (Long Beach State).
PROFESSIONAL
In 2008, he took a position as the Director of Bands for the Tenino School District. He is currently in his 15th year of teaching in the school district. In his time in Tenino he has grown program numbers over 100% and focused on overall musicianship. He has introduced the community to competitive marching and jazz through the inception of programs and regional events such as the Tenino Marching Band Festival and the Tenino Jazz Night. His pep and marching bands have become popular in the region for their up-to-date arrangements and funky dance moves. The Tenino Band truly reflects the fun and enjoyment of music making. He serves as a board member of the Tenino Education Association and was a member of the team that fundraised and brought the black turf to the Tenino School District.
Andrew was also involved in coaching athletics in the Tenino School District for a time. He held positions as the Tenino Middle School assistant football coach, Tenino High School Head Cross Country Coach, and the Tenino High School Girls Tennis Head Coach. In his four years as head coach the tennis teams were 53-2, 4x League and District Champions, and placed third in State in 2010 and fourth in 2011.
Andrew is heavily involved with the Music Education Community. He presents annually at the WMEA State and NAFME Northwest Conferences in addition to hosting a number of professional development opportunities on topics such as marching techniques, sectionals, music technology, jazz, collaborative learning, and small school program development. He is the Group Manager for the WMEA Small Schools Wind Symphony. He also created and maintains the Washington Band Directors Facebook Group. Under his direction, the Tenino Wind Symphony was selected to be apart of the first ever instrumental ensemble to perform at the "small schools concert hour" at the 2018 WMEA State Conference in Yakima.
While not actively involved currently, he's performed with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra, Historic Dukes of Swing Big Band, Sounds of Swing Jazz Band, the Northwest Wind Symphony, the Lewis County Community Band, The Steve Roy Jazz Ensemble, Kalimba (Earth, Wind and Fire Tribute Band), Jazz Underground, Youngblood Brass Band, The American Band College, The Northwest Jazz Orchestra and Rich Wetzel's Groovin' Higher Orchestra. He is also one of the founders of the Dirrty Dawg Brass Band and the CIA Quartet.
Andrew is a Past President and current Secretary and Webmaster of the Southwest Washington Music Educators Association (SWWMEA), President of the Tenino Education Association (TEA), a member of the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA), The National Association for Music Education (NAFME), Washington Education Association (WEA), the Husky Marching Band Alumni Association (HMBAA), the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Governor of the Beta Psi Chapter of Kappa Sigma Education Foundation, a life member of Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Service Fraternity, the Southwest Washington Activities Association (SWAA), and the Aberdeen Elks #593.
PERSONAL
Andrew resides in Tumwater, WA with his wife, two kids and Lady, their crazy Visla/Lab mix. He is a competitive distance runner and an active member of the Pints Pavement Pounders Running Club. He enjoys staying as active as possible and spending time with family and friends.
