One of the main skill focuses of HIST 1301 is to help students develop a stronger ability to critically analyze a variety of different sources. Through the course, students will be required to read and assess a variety of secondary sources including the textbook (don’t just read it; analyze it). Students will also be required to assess multiple primary source assessments.
During each unit, students will complete a “Thinking Like a Historian Activity” and a “Thinking Like a Historian Writing Assignment. The activities will walk students through how historians analyze both primary and secondary sources.
If you are not comfortable with your knowledge of Primary and Secondary Sources, please watch the short YouTube Video below. We won't have a research paper in this course, but the Thinking Like a Historian Activities and Writing Assignments will examine both primary and secondary sources.

The Thinking Like a Historian Activities are similar to InQuizitives, but focus on hot-button topics that have multiple viewpoints associated with them. These activities will require you to look at different primary and secondary sources and critically analyze the different viewpoints. The Thinking Like a Historian Activities are hosted through the same system as the InQuizitives, but as long as you finish the assignment, you will earn a 100%.
Thinking Like a Historian Writing Assignments
The "activities" are paired each week with a Thinking Like a Historian Writing Assignment. The writing assignments will ask you address a specific question by formulating your own thoughts and supporting those thoughts with information from one of the primary sources that was included in the Thinking Like a Historian Activity. While the "activity" is done via the textbook publisher's system, the "writing assignments" will need to be completed on the Google Docs or Word templates provided, downloaded as PDFs, and uploaded to the Dropbox via the links I provide you in the Unit Checklists. I strongly recommend that you complete the activity before you start on the writing assignments.
