Discussions
Most weeks, the students will be expected to participate in a discussion topic for the week. Discussions provide an opportunity for students to expand on their own ideas, while at the same time, exchanging ideas with others. The discussions are designed to expand upon historical ideas and look at topics from a variety of different angles. Discussions allow all members of the class to better develop their ideas and see the ideas of others.
Each student is expected to make three “posts” to the discussion. In the first (initial) post, each student must respond directly to the prompt. Each initial post should be a minimum of 100 words and fully answer the question/s asks. Initial posts should be formal in tone and style, and may require in-text citations if the student references/incorporates information from either an assigned or outside source.
Initial posts are due no later than 11:59 P.M. on the Wednesday of the week assigned.
The second and third posts should be “response” posts. These posts should respond to other students in the course. Response posts need to move the conversation forward; simply agreeing or disagreeing with the first writer will not count for credit. Each response post should be no shorter than 50 words.
Response posts are due no later than 11:59 P.M. on the Sunday of the week assigned.
Please remember that all assignments in this class, including the class discussion, need to be written on an academic level and should be professional/formal in nature. While you can certainly disagree with each other (and with me!) please make sure you do so professionally and politely. Offensive material will be removed from the discussion and subject to both disciplinary and academic action.
Please go to Desire2Learn--Content--General Course Documents to see examples of Initial and Response Posts.
