Announcements Week of 5/20 - 5/24
Hello Families,
We are winding down the year! We only have 9 school days left! It is bittersweet for sure to see the close of the school year, but I know the students are definitely ready for summer! However, students need to give full effort for 7 more school days academically, and then the last 2 days will be more fun!
GEOGRAPHY- Students should heavily be preparing this week for their State Report Poster due 5/28 and their final 50 States and Capitals Test on 5/29. Students will need to work on this as part of their homework potentially! They will have GEO HW this week as well.
SCIENCE- Students will review on Monday then test on Tuesday for our final science test on The Human Body: Bones, Joints, Muscles. Notes are online; notebooks going home this weekend, and I've attached a study review resource as well.
HISTORY- We are finishing up our notes by Tuesday to then review, study, and prepare for our final History Test on Friday, 5/24! Besides Geography, this will be our final large test of the quarter! Notes are online and student notebooks should contain notes from President Martin Van Buren through President Zachary Taylor, Texas Revolution/ Davy Crockett, Pioneers/ Oregon Trail, and Mexican-American War.
PACKING UP- I'll remind you again next week, but please send an extra bag in on Wednesday 5/29 for full desk cleanouts. However, some books will start to trickle home this next week. It's up to you whether you keep or discard, but they will not be permitted to throw their workbooks away at school.
PIONEER DAY- Coming up on 5/30! Let me know if you want to help out! We have a few surprises for the kiddos that day that we will let you know about next week! Remember however that they can wear costumes that day for pioneer day! If ordering online, you probably need to order it this weekend to ensure an on-time arrival! Please email me if you want to volunteer and are cleared! I would love to have about 5 parents per class!

Hello Families,
It's May! We have just 5 Fridays left in the school year, one of which is tomorrow, May 3rd, Field Trip Day! Let's make this last month of school the best month of the school year!
FIELD TRIP- Information was sent out earlier this week for details for Friday's trip! Please read everything carefully so your kiddo is prepared, and remember to drop off your kiddo around 7:40-7:45 at the 3rd grade loop square! Our estimated time for return is 5:00-5:30. Please be flexible for pick up and we will do the best we can to communicate, but keep in mind it is a Friday and we get to enjoy the "Temecula Crawl" traffic!
STATE REPORT POSTER- On Monday, students will be given a State Report Poster to start working on at home! The report will be due by 5/28! Have your student think about their top 3 states they might want to learn more about and note that this assignment is mostly an at home assignment.
LITERATURE- Sarah, Plain and Tall Test is on Friday! Study those notes! This is the last official Literature Test! Also our HOME: MEMORIES Show n Tell Writing is due on Wednesday, May 8th with Presentations on Wednesday and Thursday. Also, we are watching Sarah, Plain and Tall Movie on Friday. If you do not want your kiddo watching this movie please let me know. (Hallmark, 1991 version)
MATH- Next week is Math State Testing on Tuesday through Thursday. Due to this, we will only have Math Class on Monday and no Math HW will be assigned for the week. Please encourage your student to do their best work and to work out the problems on their scratch paper. This is NOT a mental math test and they will not be able to utilize a multiplication table to help solve problems, unless they hand write one on their scratch paper!
PIONEER DAY- Save the date for 5/30 for Pioneer Day! More information will be sent soon! Remember it is an optional dress up day!

Announcements Week of 4/29 - 5/3
Hello Families,
Progress Reports are going out today for any student receiving a C- or F in any subject. Please keep an eye over the 2nd half of the quarter on Aeries around once a week and check student work folders to see progress and to determine any tests/ quizzes that may need to be retaken. My retake link will be posted at the end of this email.
Next week is a big week with the start of state testing, Science Writing deadline, and a field trip. Please read below to learn more about upcoming things in the life of your busy 3rd grader!
STATE TESTING- Students will be working on their ELA State Testing next week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please be sure your kiddo has a working pair of headphones/ earbuds for the test! They also will benefit from a good night's rest (Mon/Tues/Wed), eating breakfast and a healthy snack so that their brains/ body are fully ready to do their best thinking. Please encourage them to do their best work and that everything will be great! One great thing is a lighter HW load next week!
SCIENCE- Animal Adaptation Report Final Drafts are due by 5/2. Please keep rough draft and brainstorming to submit with the final draft! All rough drafts should be edited by a peer and an adult. Please double check that your child has formatted the writing correctly, stated the adaptation and how it helps the animal survive, and if that adaptation is physical or behavioral. Please see the included Arctic Fox example to help with formatting which also shows how to do the simple Works Cited section.
FIELD TRIP- We head out in a week on our Field Trip on 5/3 to Cabrillo National Monument. Thank you for returning permission slips and for many of you who have donated towards the trip! Specific trip information will be emailed out on Monday, but start looking this weekend for closed-toe shoes that either have good traction, are waterproof, or are old and okay to get wet.... Students will be able to bring a bag and can change their shoes for the tidepool portion.
HISTORY- We are moving on to Westward Expansion Part 2 next which starts with the Texas Revolution. We will then continue on with Pioneer Life on the trails. In honor of this unit, on 5/30 we will be doing a fun Pioneer Day. Students dress up typically for this day if you want to start thinking about putting together or purchasing an outfit such as a hat/ sunbonnet or pioneer girl dress or farmer or suspenders with a button shirt.
LITERATURE- We are enjoying our book Sarah, Plain and Tall. Students need to start assembling their ideas for their 3 artifacts that remind them of home so that they can write a paragraph about each item and how that represents home to them. Please see the attached sheet for more information. Assignment is due 5/8 for presentation. Remember that these items are very special and potentially priceless, so please feel free to take pictures of the items instead of sending them in and either print them or insert them into a google slideshow using their school google account.

Weekly Announcements 4/22 - 4/26
Hello Families,
Sorry I have not been in the last few days. I will be responding to emails throughout today and tomorrow. My family and I welcomed my niece Korbin (named after the US soccer player!) Grace Fischbeck into the world on Thursday, April 18th at 9am! Lily (23 months) is already a great big sister, and even greeted Korbin for the first time as “Baby Me-Me” (my baby)!
April is already half over! Can you believe it? Next Friday, I will be emailing out progress reports for any student who has a C- or lower in any subject and we are now far enough along in the quarter that you can start to see needs for retakes, fortitude, celebration, and such! Check out work envelopes and Aeries for current grades and the Retake form is on my website!
FIELD TRIP- 5/3 Cabrillo National Monument and Tidepools
Please send in the permission slip forms and make donations to the trip in Room 1 or on the TPS Webstore as soon as possible if you haven't already. Lunch count has already been submitted, so please note that forms given to me next week may not be eligible for school lunches. Chaperones will be informed for my class by tomorrow evening. Thank you so much for your support! More info will come home as we get closer to our 5/3 date!
STATE TESTING- 3rd graders will participate for the first time this year in State Testing. We will begin with ELA Testing on 4/30-5/2. Students need a working pair of headphones or corded earbuds please! The following week on 5/7-9 we will do our MATH State Testing. HW and Class assignments in those disciplines will be lessened during those weeks to allow full brain power to be given to State Testing. Please try to have your kiddo here on time every day of state testing if possible. Make up sessions are available if needed, but most natural to take in the classroom with the rest of their peers.
LITERATURE- Sarah, Plain and Tall is our current book! Students have already been challenged to think deeply about the concept of HOME. To extend that thinking, students will be doing a Show and Tell Writing/ Presentation that will be due on May 8th. More details to come, but students should start thinking of 3 things that represent home to them. Some students may feel comfortable bringing in the items, but most students will want to take pictures of them and either bring the pictures or insert on a Google Slideshow to present to the class with the WHY/ HOW the item represents HOME to them. LIT Notes are posted on my website.
SCIENCE- Students should be working on the brainstorm/ research stage of their writing for their Animal Adaptation Report. First goal deadline is the Rough Draft on Friday 4/26. Please note each student must have their rough draft writing edited by a peer and an adult (parent, teacher, TA, etc.). Final Drafts are due 5/2. Be sure they write down where they get their information (book title, website, encyclopedia, etc.) and color their picture (no printed images, but can trace or do Art Hub). Also, in case there is confusion, no costumes are required or permitted for this report. If desired, they can wear Assembly Attire for their presentation however.
HISTORY- Start preparing for the 4/26 test! We have new notes through Wednesday, then we will review on Thursday and test on Friday 4/26 (Westward Expansion Part 1--notes on my website). Also, remember HW Passes will be awarded to those who send me a picture of their kiddo with the "ROCK" in Old Town Temecula. Congrats to the 2 who already have their HW Passes to use! Also, at the very end of the year, we will have a Pioneer Day and students often dress up as a Pioneer for that day if you want to start considering purchasing/ planning for that (optional of course).

Announcements Week of 4/15 - 4/20
Hello Families,
Thank you to the many of you who attended the Spring Showcase on Thursday. It was great to see you!
FIELD TRIP- On Friday, May 3rd, we will head out on our next field trip adventure! We will be heading to Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego. This is a great trip that mixes History and Science together! Each class will head to the tidepools together and then break up into even smaller groups for the History portion of the day! Please send back your permission slips and make the donation on the TPS webstore if possible soon! Any student who is requesting school lunch must communicate that to me on the permission slip or by email by Wednesday 4/17. Thank you!
STATE TESTING- Students in 3rd grade will be doing State Testing the last week of April into the first full week of May. Testing days are Tuesday-Thursday with Monday and Friday used for make up testing or extended time. Please try your best to have your student be present on 4/30-5/2 and 5/7-9. The first week is ELA testing and the second is Math. Students need to have a pair of working, corded headphones or earbuds for this testing, so if at all possible please make sure your child has a working pair! No Bluetooth headphones allowed! I have a few pairs, but it is best if everyone has their own set!
SCIENCE- Information for the Animal Adaptation Report is attached! Students received this information from me this week as well as their assigned animal, as long as they brought a list in. This report is due on 5/2 and should use books for research before heading to Google! Students will get some time in class to work on this, but may need to spend some time on it at home as well!
HISTORY- Students are diving into Westward Expansion. We have thoroughly enjoyed our study on Lewis and Clark! Next week, we head into the War of 1812 and the Star Spangled Banner. We will also cover Presidents James Madison and James Monroe. The following week, we will learn about John Quincy Adams, the start of the Industrial Revolution, and Andrew Jackson. We will then test Jefferson-Jackson on Friday, April 26th, so start preparing early.
HISTORY CONNECTION- Old Town Temecula has a cool family field trip opportunity. Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau (Sacagawea's son) has his name carved on the rock in Old Town by the Temecula Valley Museum. The Rock (free) and Museum would be a great family activity in the next 2 months! If you go to the rock in the next few weeks, please send me a pic of your kiddo with the rock for a HW Pass!

LITERATURE- Several Literature groups have finished the reading of Lewis and Clark and Me and have a decent amount of the packet completed. The completed packet is due on test day which will be on April 12th. If your child needs a new packet for any reason, it is attached and on my website.

Westward Expansion Part One will go from President Jefferson to Jackson, cover Lewis and Clark, War of 1812, Industrial Revolution, and the Indian Removal Act. This test will be at the end of April.
GEOGRAPHY- States and Capitals will now push to the full 50 states and capitals by including our final region of the Middle States and Capitals! Time for the big push! For Skill work, we will be taking a look at Time Zones. If traveling over break, please consider talking about this phenomenon if traveling through time zones.

I hope you had a great President's Day weekend! We only have 2 weeks left in Quarter 3, so please double check Aeries this weekend and again next weekend to see if there is a missing assignment, a Retake Request needed, or to celebrate the successes this quarter! Please also double check the dates below in the Important Dates section to help keep track of special events, testing dates, and due dates!
3/1 Field Trip to Living Desert Zoo and Gardens-
Please read the flyer attached and watch for a reminder email early next week! If you still need to submit a permission slip, please do so ASAP and if possible, please make the suggested donation on the TPS Webstore for this trip. Some quick reminders would be 8:00 drop off to the 3rd grade LOOP squares, wearing Jeans (school bottoms) and a Red Polo. Once again, you'll need to pack a disposable water bottle, snacks, and lunch (unless receiving a school lunch). So additional options to think about would be spending money....$8 to feed giraffes, $3 for carousel, Gift Shop, a snack/drink from the food establishments. Please don't send more than $50 unless you really, really trust your kiddo to not lose the funds! No money is required of course. A small bag can once again be brought to carry items.
3/2 PATS Father/ Daughter Dance
See Mrs. Huskey's email and the attached flyer for a fun night!
3/2 REVOLUTIONARY WAR ENACTMENT-
Totally fun, free option that I wanted to share with you in case your family happens to have time! Check out the link for the Huntington Beach Revolutionary War enactment. It looks like so much fun and perfectly timed to our History study! Invitation Linked..
HISTORY Noteworthy Men/ Women of the War-
Students have been busy reading, researching, and writing their man or woman of the war Rough Drafts. Rough Drafts are due by 2/29 and when I see their Rough Draft, I will give them advice and their final draft paper. This is not necessarily an at home project, but students are welcome to work on it at home and if they do not make the deadline of 2/29, you will receive an email from me for them to work on it over the weekend. Final Projects are due 3/5 so that we can then present them to the class before the end of the quarter.
Class Donations
With the winter weather, we again are running low on tissues. We are also running low on pre-sharpened pencils. Please feel free to send your student with a pack of standard, basic number 2 pencils (please make sure they are basic so they don't become a distraction or are shared/stolen), or donate to our class set.

Hello Families,
Happy Four Day weekend!
HISTORY- Yesterday, everyone picked who they wanted to research for the Noteworthy American Revolution person! I have attached the Rough Draft paper to start gathering research for their Noteworthy Men/ Women of the War. If gathering research at home, be sure to use respectable resources and websites. I will be encouraging lots of book research in class before utilizing our Chromebooks. The timeline for most would start with Birth, Childhood, Young Adult, Adult Life, and Death. The timeline must include 7 moments. Please look at the example carefully if supporting your student at home. Please know that students will be given time in class as well to work on this! Rough Draft deadline is 2/29.
UPCOMING TESTS- Next week students will be doing Latin List 5 (No Spelling or Wordly Wise Vocab), Science Inv. 1 Test is Friday 2/23, and History Am. Rev. War Part 2 is on Tuesday 2/27. Please make sure your kiddo starts studying for these ahead of time. Science Inv. 1 Test will go over fruits vs. veggies, seed parts, and seed dispersal. History covers the notes from GW Takes Command through Yorktown/ Treaty of Paris. Main events such as Crossing the Delaware, Saratoga, Valley Forge, and some famous Men/ Women of the War.
3/1 Field Trip to Living Desert Zoo and Gardens
This trip will be here very soon! Please send in those permission slips, make a donation on the TPS Webstore, and start planning for this great adventure! Thank you for supporting these opportunities for our students!

Announcements Week of 2/12 - 2/16
Hello Families,
We are officially halfway through Quarter 3! Can you believe it? Progress Reports for C- or F's will go out tonight, but ultimately, it is a great time for all parents to do an Aeries check to see how things are going as grades go in and start to form an average or trend.
This upcoming week is busy yet short, filled with lots of fun and a few tests (see important dates below)
Wednesday 2/14 - VDay, students may bring in a small valentine to distribute such as a card, lollipop, small toy, a pencil, etc. Please refrain from getting chocolates, things with peanuts, or large items. We are not doing any sort of a party or special Vday box or anything big! :)
Thursday 2/15 is our field trip! It's finally here! PLEASE READ
We will be heading to Fort Cross in Santa Ysabel, CA. Please drop your kiddo off to their typical LOOP SQUARE between 7:30-7:50. Buses will load and depart as close to 8:00 as possible. Please don't be late! Please feed a yummy breakfast and give them a snack for their pocket to eat once we arrive at the Fort. Pack a lunch in a disposable bag and send 2 disposable water bottles. Please put their names on the bag and water bottles. We are looking at a partly sunny day at the Fort with temps in the mid 60's and a breeze. Please send your kiddo in jeans (or school bottoms) and their red polo and layers to stay warm such as hat, jacket, and maybe even scarf/gloves if your kiddo tends to be cold. Good walking shoes or hiking boots would be suggested footwear. A small bag can be brought to hold a few items such as their water, money, gloves, and such. There is a gift shop...$20 or less is definitely enough to get an item or two. We should be back to the loop around 4:30. It's possible we will be back slightly early or slightly late due to things such as traffic or a bathroom emergency that just can't wait. The students are very excited and will have a great time!
Friday 2/16 and Monday 2/19- NO SCHOOL for President's Day Weekend
HISTORY- Today the kids learned about their Noteworthy Men/ Women of the Rev War Poster Project! I would like them to bring a note with their top 3 choices on Wednesdy and we will vote. Let me know if they need help picking someone. They can pick anyone, boy, girl, Loyalists, Patriots- Even King George- that had influence or was influenced by the American Revolution. I have attached a blank template and an example poster of George Washington to give you an idea of what we will be working on in class. We will rough draft it with a goal of a deadline of 2/29 and then final draft it by 3/5 to then present to our classmates.
LITERATURE- Secret Soldier
We have been practicing our R.A.C.E strategy coincidently with Literature and Writing. For this book, we have been focusing on giving plenty of examples. Each chapter has a writing reflection/ question following the reading. In case your child gets behind due to absence, time management, or just struggling to think of an answer, I have provided the Chapter Questions here for them to view at home if needed and to potentially have you help them stay accountable to this. There were some students that needed to finish the response for Chapter 3, so I gave them till Monday. Please refer to students learning log and literature notebooks. A good time to check is the mid-way point after Chapter 6 which would be over President's Day Weekend. Again, we are practicing on giving examples and citing evidence, so each response should focus on plenty of examples from the book and students' knowledge of the American Revolution, in addition to proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, and formatting within the margins.
Recitations- As a reminder, we will recite the Declaration of Independence on our Fort Cross Field Trip. Kids have been studying this, and it really does show. Please continue to practice so students are fresh for our field trip. I will start testing the Declaration of Independence next week. With this rolling testing schedule, I hope to best support all students, and the student that need the time to practice, can do so. Please remember that while student can test for the Declaration of Independence at any point, I would strongly encourage everyone to complete the testing in the next two weeks, so they are able to focus on the G.W. The students have also been practicing the Preamble in music, so I will pass out that paper on Monday, so students can practice along with the song in school.

Announcements Week of 2/5 - 2/9
Hello Families,
We made it to Friday and survived the first raining school day of 2024! I hope everyone enjoys the mild weekend weather before our next storm!
FIELD TRIPS- Two trips are heading our way! First, Fort Cross is on Thursday, Feb. 15th. More detailed information specific for this special day will be sent out next week so that you can have your kiddos prepared to have the best day possible! On March 1st, we will again head out to another awesome day at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens! This trip pairs perfectly with our current science that is focused on plants and then animals! Please submit those permission slips and donations when you can as well! Chaperones, be sure to email your desire to go on the trip as well. I know the kids have been patiently waiting over half of the year, and now the time is almost here!
BOOK FAIR- The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to TPS next week! Our class will go shopping on Thursday! The kiddos are very excited about many of the books that will be there and have a "magazine" to preview some of the items available and could help you know how much money to allow your student to bring!
==
TOYS/ EXCESS SCHOOL SUPPLIES- Post it notes are being used for purposes such as crafting and note passing, which is becoming quite the distraction. If students need a post-it for taking notes as a learning tool they can borrow mine. Please leave all Post-its home. If your child has a favorite pen, pencil, or highlighter, it is best to keep it at home, and use the standard supplies for school, so there is no confusion about trading or borrowing. Also, there seems to be a lot of toys and pokemon cards floating around. These should not be brought to school, even for recess or after school. Please tell your student to keep these toys and extra school supply items at home or they will be taken by their teacher or campus security.
HISTORY- NOTEWORTHY Men/ Women of the Rev War Project
This project will be formally introduced this coming week to the students. However, this weekend you could maybe help them select their top 3 Revolutionary War people that they might enjoy researching (excluded is George Washington as he will be the example project and Deborah Sampson as she will be our Lit Book character). I want a nice variety, so maybe encourage at least one of their three choices to not be obvious choices such as Jefferson, Franklin, Revere, Adams...

Artist of the Month - Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
This month in Art Class we are studying Pablo Picasso’s varied styles. Using a Cubist style, students will create a composition while balancing all of the art elements. Student artists will draw one of Picasso's masterpieces and use chalk staining to finish their composition. Mrs. Wong will be in our classroom on February 2nd leading out students through their masterpieces
FIELD TRIP- Feb 15th to Fort Cross
We have just over half of the needed donations submitted at this time. If at all possible, can you please donate on the TPS Webstore or in Room 1 soon. Thank you so much for your sacrifice to make this great trip happen! If adequate funds for this trip or future trips are not met, we may not be able to go on the trip! Trip entrance fees and transportation (2 buses) definitely add up as you can imagine, but the experiences on these trips are a special memorable highlight of 3rd grade!
DRESS CODE- Please do a quick inventory on the status of school uniforms for your kiddo. Watch skort lengths, holes in knees, tightness, lack of belts, lack of ties, and such. Remember every Monday is Assembly attire and a few students were missing items for our Assembly on Wednesday such as ties, white dress shirts, belaire plaid skirts or khaki pants. Also please remember to label any sweaters or jackets with names as many kiddos have been losing items and finding those items at lost and found can be quite difficult.
CURSIVE - Remember Spelling Tests will now be required to be completed in print and cursive until earning mastery (Quill Club). Also starting with Lesson 14, all Spelling HW should be completed in cursive. Also, all Reading Comp HW and Copywork HW from this point on should be in cursive. By Quarter 4, all tests will also be required to be in cursive.
UPCOMING TESTS- Students can start studying History and Literature ahead of time with the notes they have. We are about 2/3 done with both of these units with tests at the end of the month.
VALENTINE'S DAY- 3rd Grade does not celebrate Valentine's Day with a party since it does not align to our History Curriculum. We will allow a short time for an exchange at the end of the day, but please keep things small, cute, friendly, and for ALL or NONE of our class. We have 27 students in our class.

SCIENCE- We are winding down our last investigation in our Motion and Matter Unit. We are working on Mixtures and Reactions. Announcements for the Week of Dec 11th- 15th
Hello Families,
We have just a week and a half left of Quarter 2 until Winter Break! It is hard to believe and there is a lot coming up in the next 8 school days! Please read all the information below for announcements about projects, tests, celebrations, and more!
Colonial WinterFest: Wed. Dec. 20th (MINIMUM DAY!)
Please consider volunteering or donating for this great event for our 3rd graders! Information went out earlier this week. Here is the sign up link again for volunteering and donations: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/508054EA8AF23A6FA7-46558081-colonial#/ At this Colonial WinterFest, we will be doing many activities such as breakfast, crafts, and a BOOK EXCHANGE! Please send in a wrapped book ($10 or less) appropriate for a girl or a boy that is labeled TO: __ From: Student Name (or blank). Books can be sent in at any time!

CARE TO SHARE Program: For many years TPS has helped this organization provide gifts to kids in need! Consider sending in a girl or boy gift that a typically 3rd grader would love! Optional to participate! Donations to be sent in to the classroom by 12/19 at the latest! DO NOT WRAP! A book, puzzle, game, toy, or fun school supplies would be great smaller ideas!
Artist of the Month of December (3rd Grade Art Day is 12/15)
This month, students will create their own art masterpiece! The Artist of the Month is one of the greatest American artists of all time, Winslow Homer (1836-1910). Homer’s use of value (light and dark) in his masterpieces was explored during Art History. Students relived turn-of-the-century Americana through Homer’s illustrations and paintings.
TAXES AND ACTS PROJECT- This creative History Project will showcase 6+ events on the Road to the Revolution. It was given to the students this week to begin brainstorming and drafting. We have discussed all but 3 of these events in History class already and will get to the Boston Tea Party, Townshend Act, and Intolerable Acts in the first part of next week, but was already introduced in the Weekly Reading Comp HW this past week. I can give students paper for their final project, but if you want to buy poster paper for them to use that is okay as well. Work should be completed on something bigger than a piece of copy paper (could have 2 pages taped together). Be sure to check in on this creative project work completion as it is due 12/18.
UNIT TESTS: Most units are closing down for their final testing. We have tried to space them out as best as we can over the last 8 days. Please check the important dates below for the schedule for our class. With that being said, my original plan was to do the Science Investigation 3 Test in back to back with our last experiment. After talking with the class, we all agreed that for the purpose of having more time to study and spacing out two big tests (Lit and Sci), we will be taking our Science Test on Friday 12/15. Literature test will continue to be on the 13th, and History on the 19th.
FIELD TRIP TO FORT CROSS 2/15
Permission Slips were sent home for our first field trip in February! Please try to submit those forms before Winter Break if possible! I will do a official check and reminder in January about permission slips and donations. Volunteers for chaperoning for this first trip will be emailed on Dec. 14th. It will be a lottery since my class has more than 4 wanting to go! Remember also if you didn't see before, Save the Dates for a 3/1 field trip and a 5/3 field trip. Announcements for the Week of Dec 4th- 8th
I hope you all had a great break and first week back! We know our schedules fill up and everyone is full of excitement in December. Please note that academics will continue until 12/19. On the 20th, we will celebrate Winter Fest with the third grade!
Holiday Shoppe- TPS PATS will be hosting the Holiday Shoppe again this year! Our class will be going on Thursday, 12/7 during our Library time. This is a great opportunity for students to shop for reasonable prices for items for parents, siblings, pets, grandparents, etc. If participating, please see the flyer sent home on Monday with your student.
HISTORY- Things are starting to take form on our current unit ROAD TO THE REVOLUTION! Students have been learning and will continue to learn about conflicts such as wars, taxes, laws, unity and division... Soon students will be introduced to their Taxes and Acts History Project that will be due 12/18. This is a visual, creative project! Full details will be in next week's email!
FIELD TRIP- Our first field trip is on Feb. 15th! Information will go home Monday about this trip to Fort Cross where we will participate in the American Revolution Field Trip. Please complete the permission slips and submit donations before Winter Break if possible! If you want to be considered for chaperoning, please email me ASAP as I will select 4 names and notify on December 14th! Also save the date for March 1 and May 3 for future field trips! Please note that if your child is unable to attend the field trip, I need to know so that I can make alternative plans for them that day on campus. Also let me know if you need financial assistance!
SCIENCE- Slight change to Science Schedule. We are going to elongate our time with Inv. 3: Engineering an additional week. Test is now 12/14 instead of 12/7. We also won't start Motion and Matter Inv. 4 unit until January. This will give us more time to enjoy the unit and alleviate some pressure during this busy season!
12/20 Book Exchange- Please note we will be doing a book exchange in our class on the last day before break. Be on the look out for a new or gently used book (should be appropriate for a boy or girl) to give. The book should cost $10 or less and can be sent in (wrapped) anytime between now and 12/20 but should not be labeled TO a certain student. No label is required or a label such as To: A fellow classmate From: Student Giving Book Name This is different from how 2nd grade does the book exchange as it is not a "secret santa" version. If you want to donate 2 books, that is awesome! Extras will be used for those who forget to bring in a book, exchanging as needed, and the rest will be donated to the classroom library! Popular series would be Dog-man, Diary of Wimpy Kid, Who Was Books, Magic Treehouse, and Historical Fiction.

Happy Quarter 2!
Thank you to each of you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to meet with me during Parent Teacher Conferences. If we were not able to meet, a report card will be sent home with your child today. If you would still like to meet, please let me know and we can set something up. We have a busy month coming up. Please look over the Important Dates section to stay in the loop!
Quarter 1 Assembly: Students will be honored at the Quarter 1 Assembly on Wednesday, October 25th from 1:15-2:15 in the MPR. Please mark your calendar. Whether a student receives an award or not, this assembly is a very special time with presentation of a song, recitations, and awards. Third grade is the first year that students earn Dean's List (all A's), Honor Roll (All A/B's) as well as Virtue Awards and Attendance Awards. Hope to see you there!
Science: Please support your child over the weekend to see their progress on their science project. By now, ALL questions should have been researched and they should have enough information to build an informative essay. In class in the last two days, we went over how to write an introduction for a research paper. Students brought home their graphic organizers. Their homework for the weekend is to transfer their sentences from the graphic organizer to the line paper in paragraph format and proper grammar (capitalization and punctuation). On Tuesday, the rough draft is due at the beginning of class. On their lined paper, they should have some notes about paragraph format. Please do not work ahead of what is assigned each day in their writing!!! I have noticed from Quarter 1 that many kids need more practice on paragraphs, so we are really going to go over each type/format of paragraph in class. If kids work ahead and they are not familiar with the format, they are going to have to rewrite the paragraph with proper format. I have created this timeline so everyone knows what will be done in class, and what is assigned as homework each day. However, the visual aid will be one-hundred percent on your time. This weekend would be a great time to start working! As a reminder, students should be creative. (: 3D model, detailed drawing, poster board, etc... I want to give students freedom to express themselves for this aspect of the project.
I attached an example of my graphic organizer and how I transferred it into a paragraph format.
Here are some videos to help kids as they write their introduction:
We watched this one in class to help with our hooks (through 3:45): Informational Writing: Writing the Introduction
We didn’t get a chance to watch this one because kids were busy getting their recorders but it’s helpful! Informational Writing: Introduction Paragraphs
Geography: Students in 3rd grade get the opportunity to learn the 50 states and capitals (location and abbreviations) and we will build mastery by region until we reach all 50 at the end of the school year. We are starting with the East Coast. Studying these states a few times a week for 5 minutes will go a long way for mastery vs. short term memorization. Quoting/ Quizzing, using maps, using songs are all great ways to master these. I've attached the Eastern States and Capitals Songs and the list of all 50 states and capitals as well. ALSO, in Geography in our class, we are working on the Skill of Latitude. Students will be required in my class to know the 5 major lines of latitude as well as using a map to identify a location on a certain latitude line. I've included my notes page to help with study as this assessment is on 10/20.

Happy Friday Families!
Thank you for another great week and for a great start in the first quarter of 3rd grade! I know 3rd grade is a big jump but the students are truly accomplishing some amazing things! I can't wait to continue to watch them grow over the next 9 months. It was very special to celebrate September birthday today, and a special shout-out to all the parents that brought yummy treats to help us celebrate!
Our last week of Quarter 1 will be busy! Please help your child study for their upcoming tests and look over their projects before they turn them in. More details on those will follow-
Water Cycle Poster- My expectations for projects is that students use their best 3rd grade coloring, and that every space is colored accurately without any blank white space. Since this was the first project, I gave students on time-credit, but sent it home if students needed to finish coloring. Please double check with your child whether they turned in their poster. In the future, I will collect posters on the due date and students will lose effort/neatness points if the art isn’t up to 3rd grade standards.
Literature: Phew! I am really proud of the students' fortitude as we finished Pasquala this week! students will turn in their literature notebook, take the literature test, and turn in their completed ABC book on Thursday. By Monday, students should finalize their ABC books rough drafts (due Monday as homework). They have been working really hard on this in class, so most of them will just need to double check that they use a complete sentence with capitalization and punctuation for the description part. They will start their final drafts in class next week. They should complete this in class, but if they need to complete it at home, it will be sent home next Wednesday, due Thursday as homework. Literature notebooks come home today to start studying.I will post notes on my website by tonight at 9pm at the latest.
History: We will be wrapping up our Native American Unit this week. Students will be creating small books for each region in class to help them prepare for the test on Thursday, October 5th. They will also be turning in their history notebook. On Wednesday October 4th, students will be taking a test, identifying the regions of the Native Americans on the map. They brought home a map to start studying today. Remember notebooks will be checked and notes can be found on my website.
Brother Bear Movie: In honor of completing the quarter and our History Unit, students will be watching Brother Bear. It is rated G, but we wanted to let you know! If you don't want your child to view this movie on October 6th as a reward with our class, please let me know! If anyone wants to volunteer to bring in a snack or drinks such as popcorn for the class, please email me.
Recitation: The Violet by Jane Taylor. This Recitation will be tested on October 4-5th. Please review this with your child to assess their mastery of this virtue-centric poem. If any student is ready to go before then one wants one lesson test to study, please let me know and I will accommodate them!
Test Retakes- To accommodate the end of the quarter and my absence, I will offer test retakes on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Please, rather than sending me an email, complete the google form. The form collects the information and stores it in Excel so I can easily pull-up one document to everyone who wants a retake. The link can also always be found on my website.

A Message from our Room Moms:
Hello Room 17 Parents!
The Fall Festival will take place Friday, October 20th from 5:00pm-8:00pm on the TPS Field. This should be a fun event for all to enjoy! A flyer for this evening has been attached below. With each grade running a booth, it was decided 3rd grade will have an ice cream booth!! Please see the Sign Up Genius; we would appreciate candy, monetary donations, and your time to help support our 3rd grade booth. Please remember that proceeds go toward making field trips and fun events at school more affordable for everyone in your classroom.
Ticket sales will be pre-sold, October 10-13 and 16-19 after school. It is STRONGLY encouraged for parents to buy tickets ahead of time so you will not have to wait in the long line when arriving at the event. Tickets will be sold for 50 cents each and can be purchased in any increment. CASH ONLY will be accepted for tickets. ALL games will use tickets. Some of the food booths from extra curricular groups at the event will be using cash, but everything else will be ticket based.
PATS has sponsored some fun activities including a horse drawn carriage, train ride and inflatables. We need volunteers to help to monitor these fun activities! Stay tuned for a link to volunteer for the PATS activities.

Hello Families,
Thank you for your support of this year's Fun Run! The Fun Run, Splash and Dash was amazing, and as a school we were able to reach and exceed our goal! We appreciate your time and generosity with donations, reading the many emails, and attendance at this year's event. You all are amazing! More information on this will be sent out in a separate email.
END OF QUARTER- Quarter 1 is quickly coming to an end! We only have two weeks left, as the last day of the quarter is Friday, October 6th. Students have been doing a great job showing fortitude, but please continue to encourage them to finish the quarter strong! All work must be submitted that day and all RETAKE forms must be submitted by 10/3 to be considered for this grading period. Mark your calendar for 10/11-13 as minimum day dismissals for Parent/Teacher Conferences and NO SCHOOL for Students on 10/16 for Teacher Inservice Day.
HISTORY- Native American Region Research- We will NO LONGER be doing the Native American Tribe Research Project. This project has been canceled for a variety of reasons. However, we will still be doing assessments on Native American Regions Map Knowledge and Unit Knowledge before the end of the Quarter.
SCIENCE- Next week students will be drawing a water cycle with details, labels, captions, and full color! These have turned out beautifully in the past! I've attached a follow along video as an option and the rubric that will be used to grade the students with. I will be providing paper for this project on Monday; parents do not need to go buy a Poster Board! Please encourage students to do their best work! Due no later than Friday 9/29.
Students also are preparing for a test on next Friday 9/29 in Science on concepts such as meteorologists, weather tools, evaporation, and condensation. Please use their notes and textbook to start preparing. I will send notebooks home on Monday, as I just collected them to grade the weather questions and notebook effort and participation!
Pasquala LIT ABC's- Students will finish with the reading of the book next week and will finalize their brainstorming and start building their ABC final draft book. The majority of this work should be done in class, so please do not feel like you should buy or rent the textbook. I am just keeping you in the loop in case a student brings it home to work due to just wanting to or being a bit behind. Lit Test and ABC Book are due 10/3 or 10/4. I have yet to decide whether I want one or days to review before the test.
Pizza Party Friday 9/29- I promised if we raised at least $100 per minute for our fundraiser, I would buy the class a pizza lunch. We surpassed our $100 goal! I cannot host food related events till at least a week after announcing them, so our class pizza party will be next Friday 9/29. Please send your student with a drink and some healthy snacks for recesses. I will send a reminder out the day before.
