Announcements Week of 4/22 - 4/26
Hello Families,
I just wanted to start this email by saying I am proud of these kids! We have definitely picked up the pace since returning from Spring Break. Topic D quizzes are graded, and scores will be entered into Aeries by Wednesday. I have also started grading Module 4 tests, and will have those in the grade book for Progress Reports by the end of the week. As a reminder, the link to my retake form is on my website.
We will quiz on Module 5 Topic A on Wednesday 4/23. You can help your child review by talking about cutting objects into equal pieces and labeling common fractions in fraction form and their names (1 whole, halves, one half, thirds, one-third, and so on). Topic A Review will also be due in class on Wednesday. Also, I will be assigning worksheets as homework for Monday-Wednesday just to mix things up, but if you feel like your student could use more practice before Wednesday's quiz, there are the lessons 4-5 in the Apply book. Note that I will not be collecting Lessons 4-5, but they are extra practice, as fractions are challenging!
As a reminder, continue to work on that Fluency! Our goal is to have everyone pass the 0-10 multiplication table by the end of the year. If we do, we will have a special celebration for students' hard work!

Hello Math Families,
I hope everyone had a great week back!
Module 4- For next week, we can look forward to another busy week, as we wrap-up Topic D and Module 4. We will quiz Topic D on Tuesday, and will test Module 4 on Wednesday. I have attached both reviews for anyone who wants to get started on studying, otherwise students will get both reviews in class on Monday. After the quiz on Tuesday, students will have class time to work on their Module review, so please make sure students bring both reviews to class on Tuesday.
Module 5- Module 5 is all about fractions! For those of you that like pizza or are home bakers, this is the perfect unit to eat some pizza or bake something with your child and talk about equal and fractional pieces!
Individual Fluency- For the remainder of the year, your students' weekly fluency will be targeted at their "goal". If students make less than three errors on their Friday "quiz", they move to the next stage the following week! Please help them practice with their fluency homework. If all our class passes the 0-10 multiplication table by the end of the school year, we will vote on a treat to celebrate students' accomplishment!

Announcements for the Week of 2/26 - 3/1
Hello Math Families!
We have another four day week coming up! As the end of the quarter is quickly approaching, please continue to check Aeries.
In the past week, we learned three strategies for multiplying by 9's- the finger strategy, +10-1, and "any number x ten minus that number". A great way to study is to pick a nines fact, and practice all three strategies! We also learned about input and output tables. In the upcoming week, we will be writing our own multiplication and division word problems using operations and, inversely, pictures of equal groups, and then, Topic C Quiz on Thursday. We have also practiced all multiplication patterns/strategies within 10, so our fluency will be mixed facts within 10.

Announcements for the Week of 2/19 - 2/23
It was sure fun spending the day at Fort Cross with all the kids. It seems like they really enjoyed it, and huge, special thank you to all of our chaperones!
You can expect Topic B grades posted this weekend. This past week, we reviewed the Identity and Zero property and multiplication table, and identified some new patterns on the multiplication table. Now is the perfect time to review with your kiddo! Look at a multiplication table together and discuss some patterns, quiz them on some multiplication facts, and discuss some patterns they see, especially with even and odd factors/products. Or, print out a blank table and have them fill in their facts! For this upcoming week, we will look at some strategies for multiplying by 9's, input/output tables, and one and two step multiplication/division word problems. We will quiz Topic C on the following Wednesday the 21st.

Announcements for the Week of 1/22 - 1/26
Hello Families!
Thanks to everyone who was flexible with the homework and schedule change this week! We were able to focus on our multiplication strategies while building fortitude, as comprehending multiplication patterns is no easy feat! We will also have our first quiz of Q3 this week, so please help your students review! If you go to the grocery store this weekend, talk about making equal groups of groceries. If your student plays sports this weekend, talk about making equal groups for teams and the total players. There's also some fun skip counting videos on Youtube to help with their homework due Monday, and multiplication fluency! For this upcoming week, we will be focusing on the distributive property for the first half of the week, reviewing on Thursday, and quizzing on Friday.

Topic A Quiz Friday 1/26.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions!
Hello Families! Happy Weekend!
We finished Topic A focusing on weight and volume. This is the perfect unit to review using real life scenarios. For example, at the grocery store, have your child practice reading produce scales. When buying groceries, ask your kids whether the logical weight would be kilograms or grams. Look for objects with volumes in liters or milliliters, like water bottles or 2 liter sodas. You can even discuss the weight and volume of household objects, like toys! Compare two different objects, weight or volume, and discuss which one weighs more and the difference. Connecting students' learning in the classroom to real-life experience gives math purpose and meaning!!!
For the upcoming week, we are moving into rounding. We will be practicing rounding to the nearest 10 and 100's. You can support your students' learning by practicing counting by tens to 200, and again, applying rounding to real-life scenarios.
Homework
There is no homework for this weekend. Next week for fluency, we will be practicing adding by tens. For some, this concept will come easily, while for others, it will be challenging. If your child is finding the fluency easy and correcting their work before the minute, you can add some additional challenge by practicing skip counting by tens or show different numbers in base-10 (tens and ones).
I am adding rounding on a number line strategy mats to support your student with homework. You can put these mats in a sheet protector and use a highlighter or expo marker to make them reusable.
Assignments
Mon 10/23 Fluency +10 and Lesson 8
Tues 10/24 Fluency +10 and Rounding to the 2-digit numbers to nearest 10 worksheet
Wed 10/25 Fluency +10 and rounding to the nearest 10 with 2 and 3 digit numbers worksheet

Announcements for the Week of Oct. 16th - 20th
And with that, the first week of Quarter 2 has already happened and even though we didn't have math specific conferences, I am always willing to set up a conference. We are working on Module 2 now and we are already gearing up for our first Topic Quiz next week! After Topic A, we head into Rounding! The pre-cursor to this in Topic A is being confident in finding a "halfway" number between numbers like 0-1,000 or 0-100.

Module 2 Apply books can be kept at home for homework. This new unit deals with things such as the metric system for measurement, rounding, mental math strategies, and RDEW word problems! The class took their End of Mod 1 test today, so they will get that back next week!
In this unit, kids will need a ruler for homework. If you would like to donate any extra rulers to the class, we would greatly appreciate it!

Hello Math Families,
It has been a pleasure getting to know your kids this quarter! They are a great group of spunky kids, and I look forward to math class everyday. With the last week of the quarter, this will be a very busy week! Please read so you are informed on what’s happening in our math class!
Homework Due Mon 10/2
Lesson 21 is due at the beginning of class on this Monday 10/2. I gave students two nights to review Lesson 20 because it is a very tricky lesson. We did Lesson 21 in class today. As homework should always be a review of what was taught in class, even students who have completed Lesson 21, need to go back and review. One good strategy to study/review is to have them be the teacher and teach you the lesson! Write the problem on a whiteboard or scratch piece of paper, and then have them explain how to solve it!
Fluency
I am going to attach the fluency packet I use for homework. I cannot post this on my website due to copyright. However, if your student ever forgets fluency, they can check the fluency number for the week in the Friday email, google a fluency worksheet for that number, or have a parent write 20 fluency problems for them to complete. This shows fortitude, and will be rewarded.
Test Retakes- To accommodate the end of the quarter and my absence, I will offer test retakes on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Please, rather than sending me an email, complete the google form. The form collects the information and stores it in Excel so I can easily pull-up one document for everyone who wants a retake. The link can also always be found on my website. I set aside lunch break for retakes, so remind your student to come to my classroom as soon as they are done eating.

Announcements Week of Sept. 25th - 29th
I was very proud of the students' hard work on their Topic C quiz today! They are really doing an amazing job learning challenging concepts, and participate more and more everyday.
Homework Due Mon 9/25
Lesson 18 is due at the beginning of class on this Monday 9/25. Please have students work on it over the weekend and review for upcoming quizzes. There is no fluency due on Monday.
Parents Signatures on Quizzes and Test
If students earn a D or less on a quiz or test, I am requesting a parent signature. Students should have brought home the Topic B quiz today. If there is a stamp requesting a parent signature on the quiz, please sign the quiz and return it to me by Tuesday. Students will bring home Topic C quizzes no later than Tuesday 9/26. If there is a stamp on this quiz, please turn in it by Thursday. I will mark that you have seen the quiz and are aware of the grade, and then give it back to your student. If there is no parent signature stamp, you may keep the quiz or test.
Please stay on track with homework! My absence is not an 'excuse' from homework!
I have several students that have yet to turn in this week's homework, especially Lesson 13-15. I understand I was absent last Thursday-Monday, but I sent the homework for each night in last Friday's email. My absence does not excuse students from homework. For Quarter 1, I will accept late homework for half credit up to the date of the quiz. Since this was the first time I was absent, I will give students a late credit extension for Lessons 13-17 until the next quiz on Tuesday 9/26. I am no longer accepting lessons prior to lesson 13. After Tuesday, I will not be accepting lessons prior to 18.
Please do not work ahead on homework!!!
Please do not work ahead of the daily homework. I understand kids are busy, and you may want to get ahead, but this puts unnecessary stress on students (and parents!) when students have not seen the material beforehand. There are also important strategies we will go over in class. The whole point of homework is to review what was taught that day in class, so please stay on track with the daily homework. If needed, use the weekend to catch-up to Lesson 18, but please never work ahead.

Announcements Week of Sept. 15th - 19th
Hello Math Families,
I am really proud of the fortitude students have been showing as they start to learn more trickier concepts! They have all been working really hard.
Grades
I would encourage all families to review their students' grades. Quizzes are 20% of students' grades, so if your student's grade are impacted by quiz scores, I would encourage them to retake them. My retake request form is through the following link:
https://forms.gle/RxpFTSziGMT7zc3A6.
Homework
Please follow along with the nightly homework. I understand students are busy and you may want them to work ahead to prepare for a particular busy day, but the whole point of homework is to review what was taught in class that day. By working ahead, that puts more pressure on parents, and your student who has never seen the material. Also, we review homework in class, then I send it home for kids to study for any upcoming quizzes. I do not collect homework because it should be used as practice and review! I can attach the fluency packet for easy access. Thanks for your continued support!
Upcoming Homework/Important Dates

9/19 Topic C Quiz (in class), Lesson 15 and Fluency +5

Announcements Week of Sept. 4th-8th
Students have been working really hard in math class! We have been practicing equal groups, number of groups, factors, products, arrays/columns/rows, skip counting, repeated addition, multiplication word problems, and division word problems. I have loved getting to know each and every student! We seriously have a great group of kids!
Participation/Active Learning- One thing I have really been emphasizing in class is participation. As long as students are trying, it is ok to make mistakes! In fact, mistakes help the class learn when we can discuss why an answer was incorrect, and it is beneficial to make the mistakes during class time, so we can clarify everything before a quiz/test. I understand making a mistake while sharing can be scary, especially in front of the class, but again, it is actually showing strong virtues like active engagement, leadership, and fortitude. Not participating and waiting for the answer is unvirtuous. If you could please remind your student of this and encourage participation and making mistakes during class/homework, I would really appreciate the additional support.
Topic B Quiz- We used last week to practice our routines and class expectations. I felt that a quiz on Friday would have stressed kids out more so than testing their knowledge/benefiting them. Thus, we will have our Topic B Math Quiz on this Thursday 9/7.
Fluency Homework Practice- On Friday, students practiced my method for fluency. They will use a one minute timer, and they must work for the entire minute! Students know pencils only. If they finish all the problems before the minute, they must go back and check their work. If they don't finish within the minute, that's okay too! They circle whichever problem they stopped-on at the minute. After the minute, go over any problems they got wrong/didn't complete. Any incomplete answer counts as minus one towards the final score. Go over the problems they didn't complete in a colored pen. They will count their final score out of 20 and write the number correct out of 20 next to their name.
We will keep the same fluency sheet for the whole week, so students can see their improvement with more and more practice over the week! Students will get a new copy daily.
