Module 4: Assessment & Planning

Module Outline

Module Four: Overview: Assessment and Planning

This unit will allow participants to develop an understanding of the relationship between assessment and planning in a responsive mathematics classroom. Triangulation of assessment data (conversation, observation, student work product); and uncovering, analyzing and responding to student thinking by providing a range of learning opportunities will be considered. A strong emphasis will be placed on developing understanding of how assessment data and planning are incorporated to support students in moving from conceptual understanding to the development of strong mathematical or procedural fluency. There will also be consideration of a range of learning opportunities (e.g. problems, games) and how they are connected to the intention of the lesson (e.g. conceptual understanding, practice). Assessment and planning will be seen as one completely interconnected process. We will address many important practices in assessment and planning in mathematics, however it’s important to be aware that Mathematics Primary Junior Part II has a primary focus on assessment and planning and will allow participants to go into greater depth.
