What Is Compass?

Compass is a personalized learning feature that helps you skip over subjects you’ve already mastered and focus your time on what you still need to learn.

With Compass, users can test out of subjects they already know by completing a test to prove their knowledge on a subject.

When you start a Track from the Treehouse Library, Compass offers a quick assessment. If you demonstrate proficiency in certain topics, you’ll be able to test out of them, and those courses will be marked as “Tested Out” in when you return to the Track. 

For Techdegree Students

While Compass doesn’t appear inside the Techdegree interface, your progress in Tracks does carry over. So if you test out of courses in a Track, they’ll automatically be marked as completed in your Techdegree. 

How It Works

1. Start a Track from the Library

2. Take a Compass Assessment before beginning coursework or a Techdegree program

3. Skip ahead in areas you’ve already mastered

4. Focus your learning on what you actually need to improve

This adaptive approach gives you a faster, smarter way to learn—no extra hours wasted on content you already know. You can move faster through the material and spend your energy (and dollars) where it counts!
