What do you mean by design? Am I learning graphic design? What's human centered design?
Human Centered Design or sometimes called Design Thinking, is a problem solving skill that helps people from all fields develop solutions that best meet the needs of their users. Read more about this from Harvard Business Review. While you may learn some graphic design skills, the primary focus is on developing skills to use this problem solving process in all aspects of your life.
Can I design whatever I want?
Ultimately the goal of the IAN Center is to give young people more choice in how they spend their time, what they learn, and in the opportunities available to them. This summer though, designers are responsible for co-designing the IAN Hub itself. In addition, our Positively Arts partners have two tracks that fit the three week window.
Do I have to attend all three weeks?
Yes. Because the fellowship builds on the learning and inspiration of each day, it's a requirement to attend all days. Exceptions can be made for 1 planned absence and potential sick time with a doctor's note.
What's the dress code?
Come casual or however you want that you feel is appropriate for an office work space.
Do you provide transportation?
Unfortunately no. While we hope to provide transportation solutions for the future of the Center, this summer we cannot provide it and we expect our designers to be able to arrive on time managing their own transportation. We will provide transportation for site visits.
How will I be paid?
We are still working on the mechanics of payment. Ultimately we want to pay our designers in a way that best supports them. For some that may be hourly wage while for others a stipend or scholarship is best. We are working with our legal team to determine feasibility of each approach. The money can be used for whatever the designer chooses- with parent/guardian approval of course. Payment will occur after the first two weeks of the program.
