List the 3 most important things we are responsible for as a community that wants to positively impact the lives of students in Las Vegas- what is our job?
How did my own formal education help prepare me for my career? What positively stands out? What was missing?
How does the Pre-K - 12 education system in Nevada set up young people for college and/or careers? We're going to try to get as much into 60 minutes as possible and give your resources that you can access on your own time. You're invited to pause your day-to-day work and center the experiences of our young people & the outcomes from formal education in Nevada!
What are we doing? In just 60 minutes we will try to:
Get the Basics. What do we all need to know about education in Nevada? Let's start here
Option 1: School Funding How do we fund schools in Nevada and how does that stack up?
Option 2: Rewriting our Future What should we be preparing learners for? Does our education system of the past and present need to change to better prepare young people for an evolving future? How can you be a part of that?
By the end, we hope everyone can affirmatively answer that we have a deeper understanding of student experiences and outcomes in education in Nevada. That's it. It's up to each of us to determine what we do with new or refreshed knowledge & insights.
Parents: You're the experts of your own children's experience. We invite you to bring that perspective while also realizing not all kids have the same experience as yours let's investigate the education system. What do you value in the data? What matters most? What should it look like? Join us and let's learn together.
Educators: you're already the closest to our kids and their daily experience, in classrooms in-person and now virtually. We invite you to bring that perspective and also zoom out and see the big community-wide, state-wide trends and explore how the system extends beyond high school graduation.
Business leaders: we often see business leaders enter education spaces asking "how does the K-12 and college system prepare people for jobs?" While career preparation is a component of education, it's important to step back and realize not all parents and young people view public education as preparation for specific jobs. We invite you to pause and ask what young people want for their own future?.
Homeschool / Private School advocates: There is no judgment around choices we make for ourselves and our kids when it comes to education. We recognize those pathways and still focus on public education as the vast majority of young people access education through the public system. We invite you to explore this thinking of education as a public good for Nevada.
ALL OF US TOGETHER: we know it takes a village to raise a child. We know that movements thrive through the leadership of a broad and diverse coalition. We know that we can't do this on our own. We hope this is an opportunity for all of us to be in dialogue together. Share your voice. Listen a bit more. Learn as much as possible. We invite you to think of the collective experience as much as your individual one. If this is a "light-bulb" moment for even a few people, we hope it's a win for all.
