Acanthosis Nigricans Screening - Students in Grades 1, 3, and 5
The purpose of screening is to detect a black-brown velvety marker that usually appears on the back of the neck. This marker is called acanthosis nigricans (AN). The marker is caused by too much insulin in the blood. It is a pre-diabetic condition and serves as an indicator of risk for Type 2 diabetes and other chronic health problems. The AN screening is a visual exam that only requires seconds to complete. The trained screener (School Nurse) will look at the back of your student's neck. If no AN is noted the student is considered negative. If AN is noted, the student is considered positive and a referral will be sent home to parents.
