Library Procedures

Check Out

When students check out a book, the due date is 2 weeks from the checkout date. This allows for some wiggle room to keep the book current on the rare occasions when a student may miss library time. Pre-K students have time to enjoy books in the library when they come in. Kindergarten and 1st grade students are able to check out one book each. 2nd-3rd grade students generally get 2 books. 4th-5th are able to get more if they wish to and have shown that they are able to keep up with their books and return or renew them on time.

Book Selection

Our classroom teachers do an excellent job of providing on-level reading materials for our students. Self-selection is an integral part of a school library program and helps students to develop a lifelong love of learning. For many students, library selection and check out is the only time they have to direct their own reading development. This may lead to students repeatedly checking out the same or similar books or choosing a book that is above or below their assigned level, but of great interest to the child. These self-selected books offer students a relaxed and enjoyable reading experience and will help influence them to become lifelong readers.

If teachers or parents request that students only be allowed to check out books on a certain level, I certainly aid the students in picking books that are right for them. During checkout, I briefly conference with students who are having trouble picking a book and help to use their interests and skills to determine a great book for them to check out. We have also discussed some ways to determine how to choose a book on their own for check out during library time. When kids know that going to the library means they can get a book they will love, it makes the library, and by extension, reading, enjoyable and worthwhile.
