Student's instrument my be personally owned, or rented from a music store or the school.
Yes, but care must be taken not to purchase an instrument whose condition would be a stumbling block to your child. It is important to consult with the director concerning the condition of the instrument before you buy it. If you decide to look for a used instrument, we would strongly urge you to purchase the brand and model on our recommended list of instruments, along with the recommended mouthpiece
Personally owned instruments must be preapproved by the director before use in the Elder band program.
Students will be able to drop off their instruments in their band lockers before school. The band hall will be open for practice time between 8:00am-8:845am. They may pick them up after school. Do not leave your instrument in another teacher’s classroom. They will not be safe. Remember all instruments should be taken home at night.
It is important to get an instruments repaired as soon as possible. Instrument that are not functioning properly can create stumbling blocks for your student. All instruments should have preventive maintenance done on them at least 3 times a year. Breaks are usually a great time to get this done.
School Owned Instruments
The student should fill out a repair request on the band's website if they are having issues with their instrument. The director will arrange to have the instrument picked up at the school, or will provide the student with a repair approval slip to take the instrument to an approved repair shop. Damage caused by normal use will be covered by Fort Worth ISD. Damage caused by misuse or neglect will be the responsibility of the student. School owned instruments taken to the repair shop without approval will not be covered by Fort Worth ISD. The student will keep their mouthpiece while their instrument is in the repair shop.
Store Rental

Personally Owned Instrument
Personal owned instruments should be taken to one of the school approved repair shops for repair. The student will need to keep their mouthpiece while the instrument is in the repair shop and will need to provide a copy of the repair ticket to the director to avoid lowering their daily grade.
No one shall hold, play, or otherwise operate or handle another person’s instrument. This is for health reasons as well as instrument repair reasons. IF IT DOESN’T BELONG TO YOU, DON’T TOUCH IT!! EACH BAND STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS/HER OWN INSTRUMENT!
No food, gum, or drinks other than water should be used while playing the instrument. Food particles and sugar can damage an instrument.
Instruments are not a toy and should be treated as directed at all times.
The director should be notified immediately about any stole or misplaced instrument.
If the instrument was stolen at school, the school resource officer will be contacted to complete a police report.
For school owned instruments, if it is determined that the loss or theft is a result of negligence then the student will be held responsible for the replacement of that instrument. Fort Worth ISD will determine the instrument’s replacement cost.
It is suggested that all personal instruments have the proper coverage. Instruments ARE NOT insured by Fort Worth Independent School District
