Assistive technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities. In short, AT can help improve accessibility across many domains for individuals with a variety and range of disabilities. Common applications of AT within school districts include (but are not limited to): AT for communication, AT to improve accessibility of reading and writing instruction and assignment completion, and AT for physical accessibility and mobility, including mounts, prosthetics, positioning devices, and power chairs.
FWISD AT Team Mission Statement
To provide assistance to campus teams in determining students’ AT needs, and assisting in
provision and implementation of assistive technology devices and/or services.
This mission will be accomplished by:
● Supporting timely evaluations of students
● Recommending a range of devices and/or types of services
● Providing campus teams information and support for technology services
● Coordinating in-service training
● Maintaining a library of assistive technology devices, equipment, and information resources
