About our 3D Printing Lab: Creation Station
Our 3D Printing Lab, fondly called "Creation Station," was established at the Boulevard Heights School and Transition Center thanks to a fully funded Donors Choose project. The 3D printer, along with maintenance materials and filament, were generously donated by community members to Fort Worth ISD. While housed at Boulevard Heights/Transition Center, our lab provides the entire district with 3D printed assistive technology devices. What sets Creation Station apart is that it is run by adult students with disabilities at the FWISD Transition Center, who are learning independent living and employability skills. These students applied for volunteer positions and completed several orientation lessons to master the basics of 3D printing, an increasingly in-demand skill across various industries. They take great joy and care in fulfilling each order, proudly creating assistive technology devices for other students with disabilities across the district. Each order provides our students with valuable on-the-job experience and the satisfaction of a job well done.
Our Current 3D Printing Menu
1. AAC Device Keyguard: A layer of hard plastic perforated with holes fitted to the AAC icons on the screen. It is placed on top of the screen and fills up the spaces between the keys. This helps prevents the AAC Communicator from unintentionally pressing multiple keys. Keyguards must be customized to fit the tablet generation, AAC application, and protective case. We are ready to print the following keyguards for 10.2" iPads (generations 7, 8, 9) in this protective case* and this protective case* at this time:
LAMP Words for Life
TD Snap (Motor Plan 30, Motor Plan 66, Core First 8 x 10 pagesets)
TouchChat with WordPower (WP 42, WP 60, WP 80, WP 108)
Proloquo2Go (grid sizes 6 x 10 or 7 x 11)
*Please work with your campus to purchase these specific cases with campus funds.
2. Project Core 3D Symbols Starter Pack: A set of three-dimensional (3D) symbols to represent the 36 words in the Universal Core vocabulary from Project Core. Each tactual symbol is printed on a base that has a shape, texture and color that mark the word category. Each symbol also includes a unique raised element, printed word and braille to make the individual word. The three words included in the starter pack are "go, like, not", as suggested on the Project Core website.
3. Utensil Holder: If the student finds holding utensils difficult, the Utensil Holder provides a snug, grip-free method of holding cutlery so they can eat comfortably.
4. Zipper Pull: This small assistive device can be attached through most zippers to allow ease of access to zip up or down.
5. Reading Bar: This allows an individual to focus on one line of text at a time, while blocking out the other lines of text above and below.
6. Off-Menu Options: If you have something else you would like to print, there is an option to submit an "off menu" print request. You will be asked to upload a print file for your desired print.
