Moving to Wellness (6th grade) Syllabus

The Physical Education program at Kirkpatrick Middle School exposes students to a variety of activities. These activities focus on individual/team skills and concepts along with an emphasis on physical fitness and personal wellness. Our mission is to provide students with the skills and knowledge that enables them to understand the importance of a physically active and healthy lifestyle.
6th grade Moving to Wellness Expectations:
● 6th grade students are required to participate in P.E. and Health for a full year.
● Class will alternate between one week of P.E. and the following week health.
● Students will meet at the assigned classroom or gym.
● Materials needed are Water Bottle, Chromebook and Pen/ Pencil.
Virtual Learning & In Person Learning:
● Students will join their class period on Google Classroom.
● Assignments & activities will be assigned throughout the year.
● When students are in person at school, they will be provided with assignments and activities that will be completed at school or finished on Google classroom if possible.
● When students are virtual learning from home, all assignments and activities will be located and turned in on Google classroom.
Health Units: The following health units will be discussed with students.
● Emotional & Mental Health
● Nutrition & Physical Activity
● Tobacco, Alcohol, & Other Drug Prevention
● Violence & Injury Prevention
● Abstinence/Puberty & Personal Health
Parents who signed FWISD “Request to Withhold Child from Middle School Sexuality Instruction” will have their child exempt from the final unit. Students will be placed in another class classroom and given alternative assignments for a grade.
Grading Philosophy/ Scale: Our grading policy is based on the philosophy of providing an engaging and safe learning environment for all. Students are graded on their effort and safeness during PE and engagement and contribution during Health. Therefore, points may be deducted from student’s grade for things such as lack of effort, unsafe behavior, tardiness, incomplete/missing assignments, etc.
6th grade Scale:
● 50% P.E.
● 25% Pedometers/Skill Assessment
● 25% Journal
● 50% Health
● 25% Student Workbook
● 25% Assessments
Hygiene: As students transition into adolescence, it’s important that they understand their body and develop good hygiene habits. It’s recommended that students bring clean clothes, deodorant/antiperspirant, body spray, wet wipes or other personal hygiene products to help students stay clean and healthy.
Parents/Doctor Notes
● A student with a parent note will be excused from P.E. for 1 day. A student can bring a parent note 2 days in a row. After that, a doctor note must be presented for further excuse from P.E. All notes will be kept on file with school nurse.

● Parents who are interested in their child’s progress can log in to Parent Portal to check grades and conduct .https://www.fwisd.org/parentportal
● Further questions, concerns, or to schedule a parent teacher conference can be made through email or phone.
