Session Description:
This session is designed to support women who are exploring or just beginning a career in the skilled trades. Participants will learn about available entry points like pre-apprenticeship programs, apprenticeship pathways, and employer-sponsored training. The session will include open discussions about the benefits and challenges of a trades career, what to expect on job sites, and the realities of working in male-dominated environments. It will also introduce available support and community networks to help ensure long-term success.
Session Goals:
• Demystify the process of entering the trades and outline clear steps for getting started.
• Share local and national program options for training and certification.
• Offer honest conversations about the pros and cons of working in the trades.
• Build confidence and awareness of rights, support, and mentorship options.
• Provide follow-up guidance and ongoing support pathways beyond the session.

The Black Student Summer Leadership Program (BSSLP) offers a transformative opportunity for Black high school TDSB students to gain hands-on experience, develop research and professional skills, and expand their networks in a range of career pathways. Paired with mentors and organizations that match their passions, students will have a chance to thrive in a supportive and growth-oriented environment.
Eligibility Requirements:
• Black student (African, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Canadian, Afro-Indigenous, Afro-Latinx, Black Diaspora) enrolled in Grades 10–12 at a TDSB school
• 16 years old by July 1, 2026
• Available for full-time employment (July 2 – August 14, 2026)
• Available for mandatory paid Spring training in either the Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) Pathway or the ElevatEd Pathway (April–May 2026)
• Must have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) to be hired
