Regular attendance at school and arriving on time place a role in your academic success. Attendance Policy and Procedures for students includes tracking and monitoring of student arrival and attendance, as well as implementing timely interventions that comply with Ministry policies and follow best practices. In line with the Education Act, all children from 6 to 18 years old must attend school. Students are expected to attend classes every day, in every subject, on time.
MORNING ROUTINE
8:45 a.m. Classrooms are open and teachers are present to welcome students
8:55 a.m. 5 minute warning bell followed by running music. All students proceed directly to their first period classrooms at this time.
9:00 a.m. School day beginsĀ
Students who are not present in class when the bell rings at 9:00 a.m. are marked late. Students who arrive after 9:00 a.m. will be counselled by their period one teacher. If a pattern of lateness develops, students will be referred to our attendance counsellor and/or their Vice-Principal.
PUNCTUALITY
punctuality is an important life-long habit. Persistent lateness will be addressed through a progressive scale of consequences. These consequences may include telephone calls home, referral to on-site attendance counsellor and implementation of tracking sheets, referral to vice-principal, meeting with parent/guardian.
ABSENCES AND NOTES
If a student is absent from school, the parent/guardian are expected to call or email westview@tdsb.on.ca before 9:00 a.m. with the student name and reason for the absence.
If the parent/guardian does not call or email the date of the absence they should provide the student with a note to submit to the attendance secretary in order to update the attendance records with an accurate explanation.
Note: An absence and late that is not documented will result in a phone call and/or email from the school automatic Safe Arrival notification system.
Please note students are responsible for missed work when absent.
Please note that family vacations are not considered a legitimate absence. Every effort should be made to avoid scheduling family vacations during school time. Holiday dates are published in the School Calendar and on the TDSB website www.tdsb.on.ca. In the event of a missed evaluation due to family vacation, teachers are not required to provide an alternative form of evaluation. In the case of examinations, no make-up exam or alternative arrangements will be made.
Note: Appointments should be made after school hours whenever possible. Students who wish to be excused during the day must observe the following procedures:
Students must present a note from their parent/guardian to the office secretary before leaving for the appointment
In the event a note is not presented the office staff will call the parent/guardian confirming the request to sign out.
Students who wish to go home during the school day because of illness must sign out in the main office. Students may not leave until a parent/guardian has been contacted.
If a students goes home for lunch and is unable to return, parent/guardian must contact the school by phone or e-mail.
Students returning from an appointment must sign-in at the main office.
Regardless of the season, weather can have an impact on system-wide school board operations or individual schools, staff and students. Whether it's cold and snow or extreme heat, the Toronto District School Board has a number of practices and policies in place to manage the impact of this weather on the school board.
On rare occasions, severe weather conditions may require the TDSB to cancel transportation, classes and/or programs or even close schools. Should a cancellation or closure be necessary, information will be posted on the TDSB website and social media profiles, and will also be provided to local media by 6 a.m. If weather conditions become extreme after student are in school, a decision to close schools will be made by 11 a.m. and broadcast by noon. In this case, students will remain supervised in the school until they are picked up by a parent or parent designate. If there is no announcement about school closing by noon, schools will remain open for the day.
