IDC3O1 INVESTIGATING NUMERACY FOUNDATIONS
Is now approved for teaching
WHO IS IT FOR?
Students considerably below level in math skills, but capable - so that gap closing is extensive enough to prevent completion of a Math credit curriculum in one semester.
Students who want to upgrade their high school math skills and their learning skills.
WHAT IS IT?
No prerequisites, teachers must be qualified to teach one of the “source” courses (MAT2L1, MFM2P1, or GLS/GLE4O1; we are all able to teach GLE4O1). Elective credit for students, won’t count as a Math credit. Evaluation SOLELY of Interdisciplinary Course expectations. Focus is on using and evaluating learning tools to fill numeracy gaps. Metacognitive focus on self as learner.
UNITS:
Where am I Now? Numeracy and Learning Assessments - 15 hours
(Pre-Assessments: WFAS, Leaps and Bounds, Edugains, ONAP, Learning Skills Assessments, IEP Consultation for Strengths and Needs, Growth Mindset assessment, Youcubed free Stanford Student online course: Math Mindset, Growth Mindset, Math Anxiety Assessment. Summative: Student Profile)
What Do I Need? Exploring a Variety of Learning Tools - 60 hours - (gap closing)
(Math Word Wall, Selected activities from Research Success @ Your Library (2017),
planning process to build capacity to perform research, use search engines effectively, access resources, track their research process, explore and complete math learning activities. Could include Knowledgehook, MathUP, Leaps and Bounds, Desmos, Khan Academy, IXL, Brainingcamp, Edwin, manipulatives, Gizmos, PhET simulations, textbooks, activities and games, etc. Summative: Student Log of Tools and Portfolio, including reflections, Learning Skills self-assessments done periodically,)
What have I Learned? Reflecting on my new Skills - 17.5 hours
(Post-assessments matched to initial assessments in Unit 1, student reflections on effectiveness of the learning tools they used in Unit 2 will be recorded as annotations within the log or portfolio, reflect on growth. Summative: Consumer Report which synthesizes their learning, providing an evaluation of the tools available, Digital Portfolio containing their completed research and assessments, reflections.)
Taking My Learning with Me. Culminating Products - 17.5 hours
(1. Plan and design a numeracy reference tool using digital media for their future use, including a peer feedback process and revision, compare their tool with similar tools created by others (students, teachers and publishers). 2. Create a presentation highlighting their use of Learning Skills through the research process and connect to future success.)
