Accessibility in iOS

There are many built in accessibility features that allow students to use an iPad more independently.  Accessibility features support vision, physical and motor, hearing, and learning needs.  Use the resources below to find alternate ways to set up the iPad to meet your students' individual needs.

Guided Access helps focus students on a task by limiting students to one specific app, time in a specific app and use of some iPad features (e.g., temporarily stops volume, sleep/wake buttons from working).

The Control Centre allows students or teachers to personalize and quickly access the tools they need on the iPad. Some tools and features that can be added to the Control Centre for easy access are screen recorder, magnifier and text size. 

Assistive Touch helps students navigate the iPad by adding a customizable menu button to the screen which provides students an alternate way to access iPad features usually accessed through buttons on the iPad and gestures on the iPad screen. 

Display and Text Size allows you to increase text size and /or contrast to make it easier for students to see text on the iPad. 

Touch Accommodations allows teachers to meet students' fine motor needs by changing how the iPad responds to taps, swipes and other gestures. 

Voice Control allows students to use speech to control the iPad.

Subtitles and Captions allows students or teachers to turn on subtitles and closed captions when watching videos in supported apps.

Turn on Spoken Content (text-to-speech) so students can listen to text on the iPad and/or hear speech feedback at the letter or word level when typing.

Speech-to-text allows students to dictate text instead of typing it. 

Voice Over is a gesture-based screen reader on the iPad that will read out and describe items on the screen to students.  Voice Over may assist students with vision impairments to use the iPad. 

When using the Safari app (internet browser), Reader View allows students to view a page without ads, navigation menus, or other distracting items. Reader View formats a webpage to show only the relevant text and images. 

The Screen Recorder allows students and teachers  to create a recording of the iPad screen (e.g., apps, websites, photos) while capturing their voice simultaneously. 

Typing feedback allows students to receive auditory feedback while typing using onscreen or external keyboards.  You can choose to have the iPad speak each character, entire words, auto-corrections, auto-capitalizations, and typing predictions. 

The Speech Controller is an onscreen menu that provides students with quick access to having content on the screen read aloud through the accessibility tools Speak Screen and Speak on Touch on the iPad. 

The Magnifier allows students to use the iPad camera as a magnifying glass to zoom in on objects or text near them. You can freeze the frame of any magnified object. 

The Markup tool allows students to annotate (e.g., write, draw) in supported apps. Students can also annotate on photos, screenshots, PDFs and more using the built-in drawing tools.
