Order irrelevance is the idea that the counting of objects can begin with any object in a set and the total will still be the same.
Students can show an understanding of order irrelevance by being able to count the same set of items starting from different places.
While students are learning the counting principles, these principles, such as order irrelevance, are important foundational skills that must be consolidated into a strong understanding. You will find that many of the counting principles are interconnected. Once students have a solid understanding of the counting principles, many of them will become key ideas that support students as they develop addition/subtraction strategies for learning mathematics.
To support students in learning order irrelevance, provide them with many opportunities to count sets of items in different orders (e.g., left to right, right to left, top to bottom, bottom to top).
This game provides the opportunity for students to practice the skill or order irrelevance, or counting from different starting points. Educators will provide different counting cards and prompt students to start counting all the cards from different starting points.
