Counting Principles

When children begin school, they bring with them a wide range of mathematical knowledge, both from home and from their previous learning experiences (Lawson, pg. 11).

The counting principles are the strategies and skills developed as students learn how to count. This section of the continuum focuses on students' development of determining "how many". It connects rote counting skills with an understanding of quantity.
