Install the tank on a level surface to ensure stability. Stock tanks can be placed on an asphalt surface or on the grass. If they are placed on the grass it is encouraged that the area around the containers is mulched to prevent weed growth and/or the build-up of earth.
If possible, provide a space between the bottom of stock tanks and the ground to ensure that the drainage holes don’t plug up (e.g., pressure-treated 2’ x 4’s).
It is important to keep in mind the location of the closest water source (hose bib) when placing your containers.
1. Bottom: remove side drain plug; drill spaced out ½” to ¾” holes for drainage (B); place 4m long 100mm diameter corrugated drainage pipe (optional).
2. Lining (optional): cover sides (A) and pipe with filter fabric (Class 1 non-woven FOS 100 geotextile material - get from Home Depot or Rona).
3. Soil: these require about a cubic yard of soil each
There are endless opportunities for stock tanks to provide benefits to outdoor classrooms. The configuration can help to separate spaces and create smaller areas within outdoor spaces. Getting students involved in all aspects of the garden including budget planning, site placement, research and design, will provide curriculum connections to Mathematics, Science and Technology, Social Studies and Geography, Heath and Physical Education and the Arts.

Painting your containers will help to create an identity for the school while providing students with a sense of ownership of the gardens. It can also help to identify the class/group using each raised bed.
Specialty outdoor paint can be used to paint the containers. It is best to use a water-based and low VOC paint. Specific products/material and the contract specialist contact information is on the Product/Material Group List (look for Paints & Coatings).
