Challenge Yourself!

Students in Business and Technology at Runnymede C.I. are given the opportunity to participate in various challenges and competitions throughout the year. Below are just a few of the exciting opportunities that are offered.

FIRST Robotics Competition is the highest level of robotics competition offered by FIRST. High-school students team up with the world’s best technology companies to build the most impressive robots you’ve ever seen.

Skills Canada's Mission Statement is: "To encourage and support a coordinated Canadian approach to promoting skilled trades and technologies to youth".

Runnymede C.I. is committed to allowing our computer programming students experience real world scenarios. The students selected to compete will have the opportunity to be interviewed as well as design, implement and test software for a real life application.

Big Data is one of the fastest growing fields in Computer Science. With so many people using the internet there is so much data out there! This challenge gives students the chance to learn how to analyze this data and use it for good.

The Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC) is a contest based on logic. It is designed to get students with little or no previous experience excited about computing. It is run through the University of Waterloo for students in grades 9 and 10. This challenge usually takes place in November.

Each year our grade 9 and 10 Masters students participate in this International Challenge.

The top 30 students are invited to attend CS4U Day at the University of Waterloo!


Any other grade 9 or 10 RCI students who are interested should stop by the Business and Technology Department at the beginning of October for more details.

The Canadian Computing Competition (CCC) is a fun challenge for secondary school students with an interest in programming. It is an opportunity for students to test their ability in designing, understanding and implementing algorithms.

The competition is run by the University of Waterloo and usually takes place in February.

All students of the Runnymede Programming Team compete in the CCC; however it is open to anyone in the school with an intermediate to advanced knowledge of programming.

RCI students who are interested should contact the Runnymede Programming Team.

The Educational Computing Organization of Ontario programming competition is a team programming challenge. Students get the opportunity to compete against other teams solving problems of increasing difficulty. Top placed teams will advance to the regional level and then finals.

Round 1 (boardwide): is held by TDSB in March.

Round 2 (regional): End of April

Round 3 (finals): Mid May

Students interested in designing tech to help the world have the opportunity to complete in the Digital Inclusion Challenge, run by Convergence.tech.

The Digital Inclusion Challenge is a 10-day hackathon where students work in teams to develop a prototype for a new piece of technology to help solve the current year's problem statement.


The Global Ideas Institute is an initiative of the Munk School of Affairs and Global Policies "to provide intensive research and learning opportunities for high school students".

"Participating secondary school teams of students tackle a global challenge, a real-world problem without a current solution. "

The students enrolled in this program have the opportunity to work with mentors from the University of Toronto each month while they develop their own solutions to the current challenge.


picoCTF is a computer security game. The game consists of a series of challenges centered around a storyline where participants must reverse engineer, break, hack, decrypt, or whatever it takes to solve the challenge.

For this competition, students work in teams to solve these challenges over a two-week period.

The final competition of the year is The Don Mills Programming Gala.

Runnymede students have the opportunity to travel to Don Mills C.I. to compete with the best teams from all over TDSB.

WLM Girls Invitational Contest

This is a fabulous opportunity for our girls to shine!

Due to initiatives like this women now represent 47% of the workforce, as compared to 38% in the 1970s.

The Stock Market Challenge, run by Nippissing University, allows the students in our Business program to compete with each other, as well as against schools from all across Canada, to see first hand what investing in the market is really about.
