May 17th is IDAHOBIT day or International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia & Transphobia.
May 17th was chosen because it was on this day in 1990 that the World Health Organization declared that homosexuality is “not a disease, disturbance or perversion”. In 2018, Statistics Canada conducted a survey which found that 59% of LGBTQIA+ people in Canada had been physically or sexually assaulted at least once since age 15, a much larger proportion than the 37% heterosexual people who reported the same. This year’s IDAHOBIT theme is a call for unity: only through solidarity for each other will we create a world without injustice, where no one is left behind. Join us in the library at lunch to watch a documentary on LGBT Rights.
