The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) is a program for students that opens the door to work in apprenticeship occupations through the co-operative education program. Students have an opportunity to become registered apprentices and work towards becoming certified journeypersons in a skilled trade while completing their secondary school diplomas.
To be an OYAP student you need:
to have 14 credits
to be 15 years old OR
to be 16 years old to go on a construction site
to have co-op on your timetable
If you have any students for Semester 1, September 2025 who are interested in a construction placement where they will experience and explore a variety of Construction trades before they make their final career decisions – then the Specialized Trades Exploration Program To Construction is ideal for them. Students will have the opportunity to spend some time starting with the management team, then a variety of trades on a rotation with labourers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians and many other trades and earn up to 5 high school credits and 1 college credit. Placements may be on Hi-Rise, Low-Rise Construction sites, Hospitals, Industrial, Commercial, Institutional and TTC.

Students will rotate through 3 different trades at the TTC such as Sheet Metal, Overhead (Electrical) Streetcar, Repair Shop (repair overhead doors and small engine tools), Fire Protection (fire extinguisher maintenance & sprinkler system maintenance), Paint (repair drywall and paint) & Sign shop

You must submit an Expression of Interest on the student's behalf through the ELIS website. Your Student remains on your home school roll. Elvy & Ian do the pre-placement, integration, student monitoring and grading. Placements can be with any one of 25 construction builders such as Tridel, Greenpark Homes, Mattamy Homes etc. and mainly union environments as well as TTC and Hospitals. Students also visit union Training Centres. Attached is a flyer which highlights the program as well as a brochure for the student/parent/guardian. PACE: PRE-APPRENTICESHIP COOPERATIVE EDUCATION
PACE is a TDSB in-house construction program. Students have the opportunity to explore a skilled trade within the construction sector by participating in a co-op experience alongside a TDSB skilled trade employee.
Skilled trades placements are:
Electrician
Carpenter
Plumber
Bricklayer
Sheet Metal Worker
Heating and Air Conditioning
Placements are full day and students can earn 4 credits in cooperative education. Interested students must first be entered into ELIS by their co-op teacher.
DUE DATE for submitting names into ELIS is November 28, 2024

Applications Due: January 9, 2024
Interviews the following week.
Students will be placed centrally by OYAP. Teachers will be responsible for placement safety assessment, monitoring and assessment.
