Students learn that animals have distinct characteristics as they grow and change throughout their life cycle. They explore animals in the STEAM yard and begin to see the interconnectedness of animals and the natural environment. Students also build an understanding of the effects humans have on animals and learn how they can care for and respect animals and their habitats.
Students explore the properties and physical changes of liquids and solids. They participate in experiments that involve the interaction and changes between solids and liquids. They also examine ways liquids and solids can have an impact on society and the environment.
Students explore simple machines and how they are used. They design, build, and test simple machines, such as a moving toy with a wheel and axle. They demonstrate an understanding of the importance of simple machines and identify ones that can be found in our homes and communities, for example, scissors, pencil sharpeners, or a ramp.
