JK/SK French Immersion
About French Immersion in the Tdsb
French Immersion programs are designed for students who do not speak French at home. The Early Immersion Program begins in Junior Kindergarten. It offers 100% French instruction in the classroom until the end of Grade 3, although some specialist subjects may be taught in English. English instruction is gradually introduced beginning in Grade 4 until it becomes a half-day program from Grades 6-8.
Studies indicate that language skills in a first language will transfer to a second language.
French Immersion at ESPS
Our French Immersion Program is growing - it will continue to grow until we have Kindergarten to Grade 8 French Immersion at our school.
Parents that are registering for busing will receive information regarding bus routes (Pick-up and drop-off times).
learning french in the classroom
Like the English program, we follow the Ontario Full-Day Kindergarten Program document.
The French Immersion program is delivered entirely in French with the exception of the specialist classes (Music, Gym, and Library).
Students learn the language through large and small group discussions, shared and independent reading, shared and independent writing, and by listening.
Students have the opportunity to share and present in French.
Students' interest and action-orientated activities help guide the French learning.
We focus on creating a safe space for your child to develop confidence in speaking.
Getting started with French at home
Learn together! Show them that you're interested in learning French, or that you can speak and understand French.
Read to your child in your home language for 15 minutes a day, and have daily conversations.
Provide opportunities for writing (Shopping lists, letters, having a journal).
Identify French in our real world (On packaging, signs, radio, television).
Provide opportunities for your child to be exposed to the French language through television shows, songs, websites, and technology apps (See below for some examples).
La lecture à haut voix:
"Bienvenue: un livre sur l'inclusion" par Alexandra Penfold and Susanne Kaufman
Get ready for French read alouds! We will read the same text in this video in our classroom!
